Crusaders Step up Against Tough Competition at UIW Invitational

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The University of Dallas women's cross country team ran in the UIW Invitational on Saturday.  They faced steep competition, with over half of the 14 team field being from NCAA Division I and II.  The Crusaders took 13th place with a total of 435 points and an average time of 33:15 in the 6k race.  They finished above Sul Ross State by three points, and behind 12th place St. Thomas who had 332 points.  Northern Colorado took first place with 29 points, with the hosts taking second place at 46 points.

Freshman Ella Davis had a breakout performance and paced the Crusaders with a final time of 30:20.  Maria Pecha, having been the teams number one all season, finished right behind Davis at 30:40.2 nursing a sore knee.  Miranda Roach finished in 33:49.2, Melissa Gabino in 34:53, and Angela Vu rounded out the field for Dallas with a final time of 36:34.9.

"Honestly I am super proud of our team and they held their own. When they finished they felt proud and there were lots of smiles," said head coach Nick Schneigert. "These girls knew half of the field were NCAA Division I and Division II programs, but they took care of business and you felt the positive vibe. They know it's a rebuild year and our newbies understand that they need to do off-season workouts if they want to be competitive with a field like this. Ella did a fantastic job today for someone who never ran cross country in high school along with my four other newbies. I am optimistic and excited for what our future holds, especially with our recruiting class coming in."
