Crusaders Drop Three Straight in Colorado

October 1, 2023

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Dallas volleyball team played three conference matches in Colorado Springs over the weekend, facing off against #10 Trinity, Schreiner University, and the hosts Colorado College.  The Crusaders lost all three matches, falling to 1-4 in conference play and 10-7 on the year.

Trinity were in firm control of the match from start to finish, showing why they are currently ranked in the AVCAS Top 10 in Division III.  The Tigers ran away with it early on in set one, but Dallas made a game of it in set two; they were the first to 10 points and held a lead early on, but Trinity came back to win 25-20.

Dallas fought tooth and nail to keep it close for a good chunk of set three, but Trinity pulled away late to take the set by double digits and complete the sweep.

Match two on Saturday against the Mountaineers was much more evenly contested.  The Crusaders came out swinging, racking up 17 kills while hitting .333 to take set one 25-22, but Schreiner bounced right back with a red-hot set two; they won 25-18 while notching 14 kills and hitting .423.

Set three was up for grabs, as neither side lead by more than three points.  Dallas was down 21-24, but rattled off three points to tie up the set and send it to extras, though Schreiner held on to win the set 27-25.  Set four was tight early on, but the Mountaineers pulled away midway through the set to take an eight point lead.  Down 15-23, the Crusaders scored five straight to close the gap, but Schreiner staved off the comeback and held on to win the match 3-1.

The Crusaders struggled against the hosts in their final game of the weekend, failing to record 10 kills in a set against Colorado.  The Tigers had a firm grasp on the match, winning sets one and two by double digits.  Dallas fared much better in set three, matching the Tigers blow for blow and even leading in the early stages.  The Crusaders were within one point deep in the set at 19-20, but Colorado stormed ahead to win the set 25-20 and complete the sweep.
