Scholz career-high 22 Kills Highlight Senior Night Win Tuesday

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas volleyball team celebrated a non-conference victory over Dallas Christian College on "Senior Night" at the Maher Center. Led by Mary Scholz (Fallon, Nev.) career-high 22 kills, the Crusaders won 3-1 behind set scores: 25-16, 25-11, 20-25, and 25-18. Scholz produced half those kills in the deciding frame.

The opening set featured the most ties in a single frame on the night with nine and four lead changes. It was back-and-forth until a service error by Dallas Christian's Kelsie Richmond gave the home team the advantage the rest of the way at 15-14. Scholz added a kill before DCC's Cecillia Delarosa countered with her own to make it a one-point game.

Rylee Davis (Lampasas, Texas) smacked the kill that ignited a stretch of six straight points for Dallas. The first five points were kills, with a trio of them from Scholz and other one from Davis. Krystyn Pua (Escondido, Calif.) served an ace to complete the big scoring streak. After Pua's error on the next serve, the Crusaders picked back up their success with the next three points to end on a 9-1 run.

That momentum carried into the next set, as UD scored 12 of the first 14 points en route to its widest margin of victory on the night.

The road Crusaders countered with a win in the third set. Trailing 9-3, Dallas Christian cut the margin to 10-8, before the navy and white answered back with a pair of points. Kills by Mary Goodykoontz (Chandler, Ariz.) and Theresa Schramm (Plymouth, Wis.) respectively pushed the edge to 14-10 and 15-12, but three unanswered by DCC knotted the match. From that juncture, the road squad scored six-of-nine to go in front the remainder of the frame. Kennedy Bradley (Groesbeck, Texas) sent in a kill to nip the margin 21-19, but Dallas had to await a fourth set to capture its seventh non-conference win on the campaign.

The host Crusaders earned the match win by swinging for 18 kills and hitting a .342 percentage that stanza. It was another highly contested set with eight ties, but only two lead changes. Dallas Christian held the early lead 8-5, but then four straight points that included three kills by Scholz swung UD ahead.

Tied 16-all, Scholz made sure to have a memorable senior night with consecutive kills that started a 9-2 run. Scholz, who hit .326 (22-46) on the evening, secured her personal-best by one by nailing five kills during that entire span. Elizabeth Smith (Broken Arrow,Okla.) aced the last serve, as the team compiled the final six points.

Scholz's previous career-best was against Howard Payne University on Oct. 29th, 2016.

Samantha Garza (Richmond, Texas) hit .318 and contributed nine kills. Diana Hassink (Tulsa, Okla.) also had nine kills and the duo clobbered five apiece in the second set. Hassink, who was the other senior recognized before the game; led a trio of players in double-digits for digs with 16. Scholz followed with 15 for her 10th double-double this fall, and Skyler Doty (Mesquite, Texas) rounded out the unit with 11.

As a whole, Dallas amassed season-highs in kills (57) and assists (52). Smith contributed 27 of the latter category.
