Volleyball swept in Straight Sets by Austin College on Sunday

SHERMAN, Texas – The University of Dallas volleyball team fell in straight sets to Austin College on Sunday in the finale of the Group A Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Divisional. The Crusaders moved to 5-10 overall and 0-3 in conference after the opening weekend hosted by Sunday's opponent. The 'Roos improved to 12-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

In the opening set, both teams displayed exactly 11 kills with the home team hitting a little better percentage (.186 - .044). A pair of kills by Rylee Davis (Lampasas, Texas) with one in between by freshman classmate Samantha Garza (Richmond, Texas) counted for a trio of unanswered points that gave UD a 3-1 edge in the first set. There were seven ties featured through the first 20 points in this frame, but a pair of miscues gave Austin College a lead that would not be relinquished. The Crusaders held within four until a 6-1 run ended the set 25-16.

That was the most points Dallas earned in a set, with the next two going to the 'Roos for a set sweep on their home court. Elizabeth Smith (Broken Arrow, Okla.) tallied the team's one service ace of the match to start the second set, but AC reclaimed the momentum with the next eight points en route to later winning the frame and eventually the match.

Mary Scholz (Fallon, Nev.) led the Crusaders with seven kills and tied Diana Hassink (Tulsa, Okla.) with a team-high 17 digs. Smith added five kills and combined with Stephanie Janysek (Sinton, Texas) for 17 assists with seven by the junior.

Austin College compiled 39 kills led by Rebekah Bowden, Brooke Harris, and Dakota Jeffcoat with nine, eight, and seven, respectively. Katie Ingle made 27 assists and Tatiana Ferrari came up with 24 digs, as each notched game-highs.
