IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas volleyball team delivered perhaps its top performances of the season on Friday night in front of an energetic crowd at the Maher Center, as the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) stopped by for the 8-in-8 tour. The Crusaders improved to 4-5 with a straight set sweep over Brooklyn College in the nightcap of the UD Tournament that had three neutral site matches earlier. The visiting Bulldogs fell to 5-2 after their second straight setback.

The Crusaders hit a .296 kill percentage in the first set and cruised to their largest margin of victory in a set (25-7) to open their first home match of 2017. This differential was powered by 15 straight points for UD that moved UD to a 24-5 advantage. Merit Paramo (Wasilla, Alaska) was on the serve during that run and aced the final point.

In the second set, the Crusaders raced out to a 12-4 advantage. Mary Scholz (Fallon, Nev.) garnered five straight UD kills to help the team gain that early edge. The Bulldogs cut the deficit within three points (17-14), but the next six points went to the home squad. Krystyn Pua (Escondido, Calif.) was on the serve after a kill by Samantha Garza (Richmond, Texas) gave Dallas possession again. An ace by Pua capped the run and then Sarina Rozek for Brooklyn sent down a kill for its final point. Positive attacks by Paramo and Scholz, respectively lifted Dallas up 2-0 in the match.

The Crusaders earned their third set sweep of the year by closing out the night with a 25-12 final. Dallas reached double-digits with 14 of the first 18 points scored, and racked up the final seven to secure its fifth win in a row at the Maher Center dating back to last fall. Diana Hassink (Tulsa, Okla.) was on the serve during that final span and garnered three aces, including the match point.

Scholz hit .297 and paced Dallas with 14 kills and tied Hassink for a team-high in digs (16). Pua contributed 14 digs. Paramo and Garza added seven and five kills, respectively. Stephanie Janysek (Sinton, Texas) produced 19 assists, while Elizabeth Smith (Broken Arrow, Okla.) made nine in the third frame. The Crusaders held a 33-10 edge in kills and amassed 14 service aces with half from Hassink counting for a career-high. Her previous-best was five last season against LeTourneau University on September 2nd.
