Volleyball drops first 2 Friday in Millsaps Invitational

JACKSON, Miss. - The University of Dallas volleyball team went 0-2 on Friday at the Millsaps Invitational. The Crusaders held an early 2-0 lead in the first match of the day versus LaGrange College. However, the Panthers won the next three sets to win in five. Scores were as followed: 25-18, 25-22, 21-25, 22-25, 7-15. In the nightcap, Dallas was topped in four sets by LeTourneau University. Once again UD had an early advantage with a 25-13 win in the opening set. LeTourneau won the next three: 21-25, 19-25, and 15-25 to secure the match. 

Mary Scholz (Fallon, Nev.) made her senior debut with a double-double in kills (13) and digs (16). Behind her team-high was Merit Paramo (Wassila, Alaska) with 11 kills. Sarah Hughes (Fair Oaks, Calif.) and Kennedy Bradley (Groesbeck, Texas) chipped in nine and eight, respectively. The Crusaders notched 48 kills as a team. Stephanie Janysek (Sinton, Texas) posted 24 assists. Elizabeth Smith (Broken Arrow, Okla.) added 19. 

The Panthers were led by Emily Arnold in kills with 17. Jazzlyn Kenner contributed 11 and hit a .444 percentage. Amanda Beatty made 25 digs to lead the defense that was outdone 87-56 in digs by UD. Lauren Sanders (26) and Libby Compton (23) combined for all 49 of LaGrange's assists. 

In the later match against the Yellow Jackets, the Crusaders saw two players record double-doubles in kills and digs. Scholz and Hughes both led the squad in kills and digs with 11 and 15, respectively. Diana Hassink (Tulsa, Okla.) anchored the defense with 31 digs. Krystyn Pua (Escondido, Calif.) added 12 digs to complete a quartet of Crusaders in double-digits as the team collected 94 altogether. Janysek and Smith shared time as setters. Janysek produced 21 assists while Smith had 12. 

LeTourneau's offensive leaders each garnered 10 kills as Hailey Matthews and Lauren Egby-McNeal finished with that amount. Matthews finished second on the team in defense with 23 digs. Liz Williams was the leader defensively with 33 digs. Altogether, the Yellow Jackets made 106 digs, and had a quintet of players in double figures. Korissa White was part of that group with 11, but also led the team in assists with 27.
