Austin College sweeps Crusaders in 3 Sets to Advance Friday

SHREVEPORT, La. – The No. 4 Seed Austin College (24-13) swept the No. 5 University of Dallas (13-20) volleyball team on Friday in the first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Quarterfinal match.

Set Scores: L 3-0 | (21-25, 18-25, 20-25)

HOW IT HAPPENED

A sluggish start hampered the Crusaders in the first set. Their opponent surged on a 13-4 run to gain early momentum. Dallas began chipping away and would cut the deficit but did not overcome the margin.

In the second set, Dallas kept things even and would gain its first advantage of the frame thanks to a trio of attack errors by the 'Roos. A kill by UD's Merit Paramo (Wasilla, Alaska) lifted the Navy and White back ahead after AC tied the match for the second time out of six in the set. The Crusaders never led by more than two and after a Mary Scholz (Fallon, Nev.) kill; Austin College scored four straight points to claim the lead for the remainder of the set. Despite a timeout taken after that outburst, the Maroon and Gold eventually closed a 2-0 edge by winning eight of the last 10 points.

The third set was back and forth until, with the set tied at 17, the 'Roos scored eight of the next 11 points to win by five and move onto the semifinals later that day against top-seeded Trinity University.

Dallas did trail 4-0 out of the first serve in the final set, but nipped the gap to one (5-4) with the first points tallied via kills. Paramo had the first two and then Scholz and Diana Hassink (Tulsa, Okla.) went back-to-back after Paramo's to cap a 3-0 streak. AC's 5-1 run countered its opponent and ballooned the lead back to five. The Crusaders engineered nine of the next 10 points and took a 14-11 advantage, their largest of the contest.
