FIRST SERVE

The University of Dallas volleyball team (3-2) returns to a familiar venue this weekend in the Austin College Invitational. After splitting four matches, 2-2, in the Austin College Classic a week ago, the Crusaders are back for another quartet of games. Senior Jessie Koster (Sherwood, Ore.) was named to the All-Tournament Team in the first classic.

Dallas will be up against University of Texas at Tyler (6 p.m.) and Concordia University (8 p.m.) on Friday. They conclude the trip with Sul Ross State University (11 a.m.) and McMurry University (5 p.m.) on Saturday.


UD NOTES

- Sophomore Mary Scholz (Fallon, Nev.) leads the team after five matches with 58 kills and is averaging 3.22 a set. Senior Mairin Guilfoyle (Roanoke, Va.) is second with 37 kills.

- Senior Jessie Koster (Sherwood, Ore.) is first on the squad with 26 digs and 7.00 per set.

- Sophomore Elizabeth Smith (Broken Arrow, Okla.) paces the setters with 118 assists.

- As a team, UD has logged 44 service aces compared to opponents gaining 14. Scholz holds an individual team best with 12. Koster (8), Guilfoyle (7), Smith (6), and junior Diana Hassink (Tulsa, Okla.) (5) all have at least five.

- Senior Allison Seager (Dallas, Texas) has five aces with nine serve attempts.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS

(UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT TYLER)

The Patriots (4-0) swept four games last weekend in the Austin College Classic, combing for a 12-3 record in sets overall. A quartet of players are above 30 kills on the season. Macy Harris (38), Brianne Brown (37), Callie Reed (34), and Allyson Dernehl (32) are atop the leaderboard in that unit. Reed and Dernehl have posted kill percentages of .316 and .308, respectively.

UT-Tyler Season Stats

In the all-time series, Dallas is 5-11. A week ago, the Crusaders fell 3-0 in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Friday. Brown led a balanced attack for UTT with eight kills. Reed and Dernehl each had seven. UD's Guilfoyle posted six kills and Smith added 14 assists.

(CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY)

The Tornadoes (1-3) will play Dallas second on Friday after taking on Rust College at 2 p.m. earlier in the day. Concordia fell in four sets to McMurry University on Tuesday.

In CU's win versus Concordia Ann Arbor, the Tornadoes were led by Carly Custer with 15 kills in 40 total attempts. Marissa Stinson and Kelly Farina each put up double figures in kills with 12 and 10. Lianne VanDyke chipped in 41 assists and Lexi Perez made 22 digs.

Dallas is 3-9 overall and last played the Tornadoes in 2013. That match was also at Sherman, Texas, in an Austin College Tournament. The set was decided in five frames.

(SUL ROSS STATE UNIVERSITY)

The Lobos (0-6) are still seeking their first victory in 2016. With every game at Austin College so far, Sul Ross State will be back again for another four tilts this weekend. Prior to Dallas on Saturday, the Lobos face Williamette University at 12 p.m. and Rust College at 4 p.m. on Friday.

Brittany Serrano (42) and Candice Hugi (40) lead the squad in kills. Katie Reeves and Kayla LaRue are nearly identical in assists with 77 and 74, respectively.

Sul Ross State Season Stats

These teams last met a week ago in the Austin College Classic, where UD swept the Lobos in straight sets (25-18, 25-16, 25-17. That is the Crusaders' lone sweep so far this year. Scholz notched 12 kills and Hassink added seven. UD posted a season-high 12 service aces, with Scholz collecting five for a personal best.

In the all-time series, Dallas is 13-15.

(MCMURRY UNIVERSITY)

The Warhawks are 3-2 overall this season and went 2-2 a weekend ago in the Austin College Classic. Most recently, McMurry defeated Concordia at home in four sets on Tuesday. In that contest, Baylie Barnes managed a game-high 15 kills in 34 attempts for a .324 kill percentage. Justice McGowan contributed nine kills, while Jordyn Burnell and Katy Headrick added eight apiece.

These teams managed to miss each other last weekend in the Austin College Classic. In the all-time series, Dallas is 6-19. The Crusaders won the most recent two meetings in 2014, taking a victory at each team's home venue. UD won at the Maher Center in three sets. Guilfoyle had six kills and 11 digs while Koster posted 13 digs in the home sweep. On the road in Abilene, Guilfoyle pounded a career-high 17 kills and Koster added 21 digs.

In 2009, these programs met twice at Austin College on separate occasions with Dallas prevailing 3-1 in the first match. Later on down the calendar, the Warhawks took a 3-0 victory.


UPCOMING SCHEDULE

Dallas continues its lengthy road trip to Colorado Springs, Colorado, for three games over September 16-17. The Crusaders start Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) action with Centenary College of Louisiana. UD also will face Austin College and host school Colorado College over the slate.
