SHERMAN, Texas – The University of Dallas volleyball team (3-2) concluded the Austin College Classic with a 2-2 split after Saturday's results. Dallas picked up its first set sweep of the year over Sul Ross State University (0-6), but was unable to get by University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (4-0). DALLAS VS. SUL ROSS STATE

Set Scores: UD wins 3-0 | (25-18), (25-16), (25-17)

The Crusaders wasted no time jumping out to an early lead in the first set through the first 12 points (10-2). That edge ballooned into double digits (15-4) with the past four awarded scores coming from sophomore Mary Scholz's (Fallon, Nev.) service aces. She recorded five in the triumph for a new career-high and matched junior Diana Hassink's (Tulsa, Okla.) season-high the other night against LeTourneau University.

In the middle set, UD prevailed by its largest margin of the match and did so with another quick start of five straight points. After the Lobos got on the board with a pair, Dallas rattled off a pair of 4-0 runs to complete an 8-2 surge and open its largest lead of the frame (13-4). Sophomore Kyndal Miller (Crockett, Texas) registered a kill on the last point of that run and senior Mairin Guilfoyle (Roanoke, Va.) and Koster added to UD's service ace count with one apiece in the spurt. Scholz's fifth ace gave the Crusaders their first double-digit advantage of the set.

Sul Ross State mustered its largest edge in a set by scoring the first six points and leading by as many as nine (10-1) in the third set. A 17-5 scoring stretch turned the tide back to the Crusaders. The final portion of the run included a five-point streak to catapult Dallas up 18-15. After a Sul Ross State timeout, the Lobos scored to cut the deficit to a pair, but UD secured its first 3-0 win by taking six of the final eight points.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

- Dallas produced a .333 kill percentage (14-30) in the first set.

- Scholz led the team with 12 kills and hit .375, while Hassink contributed 7 and hit a .412-clip.

- Koster totaled 21 digs.

- The Crusaders etched 15 blocks, with freshman Merit Paramo (Wasilla, Alaska) and Scholz notching five each. Miller made four rejections.

- UD posted a season best 12 service aces and committed only 4 service errors.

- Sul Ross State was led offensively by Emily Campos with six kills.

DALLAS VS. MARY HARDIN-BAYLOR

Set Scores: UMHB wins 3-0 | (25-19, 25-21, 25-13)

The Crusaders were unable to blemish Mary Hardin-Baylor's unbeaten record this season. The UMHB Crusaders swept all their matches in the classic, but UD challenged in the first two frames.

Consecutive kills by Scholz in the opening possessions jump started Dallas to a 4-1 edge in the first set. That lead grew to 6-2, but three straight points to the opposition shrunk the margin. Dallas countered with two more points, but a 6-0 run swapped the lead to UMHB and would be too much for the navy and white to overcome as play continued.

In the second set, the Crusaders trailed early by as many as five (10-5), but rattled off a 9-1 run to surge back on top 14-11. The scoring eruption began on a kill from Guilfoyle and then back-to-back aces by senior Allison Seager (Dallas, Texas), who finished with three overall. After Mary-Hardin Baylor scored, it was a UD 6-0 stretch to conclude the overall run. However, another six unanswered was countered by the opposing Crusaders to regain control of the set.

Dallas was unable to keep pace in the final set, but left the classic having a winning record with five matches being played in the past three days.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

- Scholz led the offense with 12 kills. She hit double figures in that category four of the first five contests. Guilfoyle added six.

- Sophomore Elizabeth Smith (Broken Arrow, Okla.) dished 17 assists and Koster was lone player in double-digits on digs with 16.

- UHMB's Sydney Stolz and Abby Voskuil each broke double-digits in kills with 11 and 10, respectively. Voskuil captured a double-double with 13 digs and was second behind Jordan Yates, who had 15.

- Natasha Evans logged 32 assists.
