Volleyball wins 3 straight sets to Top LeTourneau; Falls against Texas-Tyler

SHERMAN, Texas – The University of Dallas volleyball team (2-1) completed a split in the first pair of matches at the Austin College Classic on Friday. After rattling off three straight set victories against LeTourneau University (1-1), the Crusaders were defeated the first time in 2016 in a 3-0 setback to University of Texas at Tyler (2-0).

DALLAS VS. LETOURNEAU

Set Scores: (21-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-10)

An opening set loss did not dampen UD's competitive fire in the first match of a doubleheader at SCAC's Austin College hosted tournament. Dallas moved out to a 4-2 advantage in the second set, but the YellowJackets kept pace reclaiming the lead 6-5. With the score knotted 7-7, sophomore Elizabeth Smith (Broken Arrow, Okla.) punched a kill from freshman Stephanie Janysek (Sinton, Texas) to give the Crusaders a lead that was not relinquished. That juncture sparked a 14-5 scoring outburst for UD to even the sets 1-1.

That momentum remained on the Navy and White's side, with the next two frames favoring Dallas. The third set was another tight battle with Dallas pulling away on a 7-2 run after being locked in a 12-all score. The Crusaders rolled on for their largest set margin triumph of the young campaign (15). That final set included UD jumping out to a 12-2 edge, and a few possessions later rattled off a 10-0 spurt to display a 23-6 advantage.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

- Sophomore Mary Scholz (Fallon, Nev.) shattered a career-high 18 kills and had 31 combined through two matches. It was also Scholz's second double-double in as many contests with 12 digs.

- Senior Mairin Guilfoyle (Roanoke, Va.) notched the other UD kills double figure with 11. Smith rounded out the top three Dallas attackers with eight kills.

- Smith also produced 30 assists. Janysek contributed 12 assists.

- Dallas orchestrated 11 service aces, with junior Diana Hassink (Tulsa, Okla.), posting a career-high of five. Hassink's previous best was three last season versus Arlington Baptist College (Oct. 1).

- Senior Jessie Koster led the defense with 34 digs.

DALLAS VS. UT-TYLER

Set Scores: (25-17, 25-18, 25-13)

The Crusaders kept pace in the early going of a difficult Texas-Tyler matchup, but would be unable to close out in their first setback of the year. Two one-point advantages in the opening serves of the first and third set were the lone edges for UD. Still, there was competitive effort. In the beginning frame, Dallas narrowed the deficit to three (14-11) before five unanswered points for the Patriots opened the gap.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

- Guilfoyle posted six kills.

- Koster and Smith tallied 14 digs and assists, respectively.

- The team totaled five service aces.

- UT-Tyler's Brieanne Brown had a game-high eight kills. Callie Reed and Allyson Dernehl each added seven.

- Reighanna Guzman dished 15 assists and Rebecca Floyd contributed 12.
