Volleyball drops two on First Day of SCAC Cross-Divisional Friday

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Dallas volleyball team (10-16, 4-8 SCAC) fell in the first of two matches on Friday in the SCAC Cross-Divisional hosted by Colorado College. Dallas was nipped 3-2 by Schreiner University and unable to halt No. 11 Southwestern University in the latter match.

The Lady Crusaders were topped by Schreiner with set scores: 25-22, 19-25, 24-26, 25-20, 15-7.

In the opening set, the Mountaineers controlled the tempo throughout, leading by as many as eight (20-12). However, UD closed the frame on a 10-5 run, including three-straight points to bring the gap to 24-22. After Schreiner took a timeout, Caitlin Otten recorded the kill for the set point.

Dallas countered with a solid second set, exchanging points with its opponent until near the end of the round. With the score knotted 19-all, senior Cat Dowgwillo (St. Louis, Mo.) pounded a kill that sparked a span of seven-straight points to propel the Navy and White to a 1-1 match. During the run, Schreiner committed four attack errors, and Dowgwillo added a block right before the set point.

The third set was the closest of the game, with an extra point having to be tallied to decide the victor. The Lady Crusaders held an early advantage 10-6 at one point after a 5-0 run erased an early deficit. However, a 6-1 spurt for the Maroon and White gave them the lead for the first time since leading by two (6-4) prior to the UD streak.

In a set that featured 14 ties, Dowgwillo wacked another one of her 11 kills in the contest to give Dallas a 23-20 edge. Schreiner battled and forced a final tie, before the Lady Crusaders took successful attack results from juniors Lexi Noriega (Salinas, Calif.) and Mairin Guilfoyle (Roanoke, Va.), respectively, to give UD a thrilling 2-1 lead. Guilfoyle did round out the top three players on offense with nine kills.

Schreiner would come out of the gates strong in the final pair of frames, and were able to regain control of the match after consecutive set victories.

Later Dallas would fall to Southwestern in three-straight sets: 13-25, 16-25, 21-25. The top 25 nationally ranked opponent proved to be too much for the Lady Crusaders on the afternoon. In the final set, UD kept up through the first 20 points exchanged, until the Pirates rattled off five in a row to build a 15-9 edge.

The Lady Crusaders answered back with five of the next six points tallied to cut the margin to one (16-15). A few possessions later, UD would bring the deficit to one point for the seventh time, and fourth since the score mentioned previously. 22-21 was as close as the Navy and White got, as SU notched the final three points to seal the sweep.
