Volleyball gets past Schreiner; Come up short in rally to Texas Lutheran

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Dallas volleyball team (7-8, 2-3 SCAC) would split two games on Saturday in the SCAC Cross-Divisional hosted by Trinity University. Dallas opened the day with a 3-1 win over Schreiner University, before getting topped 3-2 in the nightcap versus Texas Lutheran University. Today's victory marked the first time this season UD won without a straight-sweep.

In the first match, Dallas was able to defeat the Mountaineers with set results: 25-17, 21-25, 25-15, and 25-21. The first frame had the Lady Crusaders pull away with an 11-3 spurt to build its largest lead of the time 18-10. The greatest advantage that set was 10 (23-13).

The next set, Schreiner countered an early 8-2 deficit to pull within two, but never claimed its first lead since the first three points, when the team went up 21-20. That was in the midst of a 6-0 run, and would even the game 1-all.

UD shifted the momentum back in the largest margin difference on the scoreboard in the third set. Trailing 5-2, the Lady Crusaders nipped the difference with five-straight points and never relinquished the advantage. Five of the final six points went in the Navy and White's favor that set.

A fourth set would determine who prevailed in the first game of the conference weekend, with Dallas able to finish its second league win of the fall. After playing to its sixth deadlock of the round at 17-17, the Lady Crusaders rattled off five of the next six points and went on an 8-4 stretch.

In the later match to Texas Lutheran, the Lady Crusaders would battle from an 0-2 hole in the set finishes to force a match-deciding fifth. The final set tallies were: 17-25, 9-25, 25-22, 25-18, and 11-15.

The third frame was the first time UD caught much distance from the Black and Gold, building its largest edge of the day to 16-8. TLU rallied with five points in a row to close the gap, but could not overcome the team on the visitor's side of this neutral site match. After 19-all result, Dallas turned the tide with two-straight points and earned the first set point of the night.

A fourth set resulted in the Lady Crusaders finishing the equalizer in solid fashion after utilizing an 11-2 span to erase the early three-point deficit. However, a comeback would fall short for Dallas, as the Bulldogs roared away with five of the final six points in the fifth set. This was on the heels of a 6-2 run by the Lady Crusaders to knot things 10-10. It was also the first time this year, UD played to a fifth set.
