No. 11 Colorado College gets by Volleyball on Sunday

SHREVEPORT, La. – The University of Dallas volleyball team (6-7, 1-2 SCAC) fell 3-0 in the final match against No. 11 Colorado College (12-1, 3-0 SCAC) on Sunday. The game wrapped up the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC)-opening weekend hosted by Centenary College of Louisiana, where UD posted a 1-2 mark.

The first set would be the closest the Lady Crusaders came to stealing a win from the top-25 ranked opponent, falling 25-22. The remaining set scores were 25-18 and 25-14.

CC tallied the first point of the frame on a kill by Abbe Holtze, but Dallas got on the board with an attack error and service ace from senior Cat Dowgwillo (St. Louis, Mo.) to go ahead 2-1. She had two of the team's three in the match.

The squad's traded points until UD built an early 10-6 advantage, but would eventually be nipped when the Tigers knotted things 17-all. The Navy and White countered again with two in a row to gain momentum, but Colorado College closed the set with six unanswered points.

In the second set, the Tigers utilized a 5-0 run to get a lead that was not relinquished. The largest of the set was seven in the final rally. In the final set, An early 12-2 stretch was too much to overcome for Dallas.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE VS. COLORADO COLLEGE (12-1, 3-0 SCAC)

  • Senior Jaime Birzer (Ottawa, Kan.) posted eight kills in the match for a team-high. The middle-blocker paced Dallas in all three league games by accumulating 26 kills altogether. She notched one block solo and one block assists, which accounted for one of the team's four totals for both categories.
  • Also adding to UD's overall kills (26) were Dowgwillo and junior Mairin Guilfoyle (Roanoke, Va.) with six and five, respectively. Dowgwillo blocked a team-high three balls, with a pair of block solos.
  • Three players surpassed double figures in digs on the defensive side of the court. Leading the unit was junior Jessie Koster (Sherwood, Ore.) with 16. The libero has gone 12 matches in a row with at least 12 digs. Rounding out the group were junior Diana Hassink (Tulsa, Okla.) and Guilfoyle with 11 and 10, respectively.
  • Freshman Elizabeth Smith (Broken Arrow, Okla.) picked up 13 assists for a team-high.
  • Colorado College was led by Holtze with 14 of the squad's 38 kills. Rebecca Watson picked up 17 assists while Sarah Barker chipped in 11. Sophie Merrifeld matched a game-high 16 digs and Holtz garnered 12.
  • As team, the Tigers amassed 14 block assists. Courtney Birkett was involved with four stops, while Kaimara Herron and Keli Sherwood blocked three apiece.

UP NEXT

Dallas remains in conference action next weekend on September 26-27. Trinity University will be hosting four matches that the Lady Crusaders will be in. On the 26th, Dallas faces Schreiner University at 12:30 p.m. and Texas Lutheran University at 5 p.m. The quartet of games ends that next Sunday versus Southwestern University and Trinity at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
