Volleyball Bounces back to defeat Knox College after setback to UW-Oshkosh on Saturday

ST. Louis, Mo. – The University of Dallas moved to 3-2 on the year on Saturday, after splitting two matches in the second day of the ASICS Invite hosted by Washington University (MO). Dallas fell 3-0 to UW-Oshkosh and triumphed over Knox College 3-0. Overall on the weekend, the Lady Crusaders went 2-2 after splitting Friday's double-dip.

After the entire tournament, junior Jessie Koster (Sherwood, Ore.) was named to the ASICS All-Tournament Team.

MATCH 1: University of Dallas (2-2) vs. UW-Oshkosh (5-0)

Dallas was unable to contain an undefeated Titans team Saturday morning, falling in sets: 25-13, 25-9, and 25-17.

Junior Mairin Guifoyle (Roanoke, Va.) produced eight kills to lead the team while junior Lexi Noriega (Salinas, Calif.) and senior Cat Dowgwillo (St. Louis, Mo.) logged five apiece. Koster totaled 20 digs, and freshman Elizabeth Smith posted 12 assists.

For UW-Oshkosh, Laura Trochinski led all players with 10 kills, followed by Nerissa Vogt with eight. Brooke Brinkman and Katelyn Malcheski added seven and six kills, respectively. Mandy Trautmann and Trochinski broke double-digits in digs on the defensive end with 19 and 12, respectively. Lexi Thiel finished with 33 assists.

MATCH 2: University of Dallas (3-2) vs. Knox College (1-3)

In the latter match of the two-day slate, the Lady Crusaders battled to its third sweep of the young campaign. The final set scores were: 26-24, 25-23, and 25-16 over Knox College.

The opening set witnessed UD push out to a 9-5 advantage before the Prairie Fire scored three-straight to cut things at 9-8 at that point. The Lady Crusaders rallied for eight of the next 10 points to build a 17-10 lead.

A 6-0 run by Knox brought the set to a nail-biter, but the Navy and White fought to extra serves. With the scoreboard favoring Dallas 21-19, there would be four ties through the final result, but the squad never relinquished the edge, and jumped in front 1-0 in the match.

In the second set, both teams exchanged points with neither forcing much of a rally. The largest lead in this frame was four points, which occurred twice (18-14 and 19-15), in favor of the Lady Crusaders.

KC rattled four-straight points, with a three of them coming off attack errors for Dallas. Another span of points traded would knot the set 23-23 and two final points were awarded to the Lady Crusaders. Noriega slammed the final kill with an assist from Smith.

The last set would be the greatest scoring margin difference for UD, with the final tally being nine.

Guilfoyle extended her team-high kill streak to five matches in a row. The outside hitter pounded a season-high 14 kills, improving one up from her season best last night versus Rhodes College, as she totaled 14 in this one. Two players added eight kills for UD with Noriega and Dowgwillo notching them. Junior Diana Hassink (Tulsa, Okla.) contributed seven kills.

Dallas outdid the Prairie Fire in kills 42-28.

Smith finished with a career-high 28 assists and Koster dug a season-high 27 balls.

For Knox College, Rose Griffin led the way with nine kills. Rachael Powell and Griffin both posted 17 digs each. Casey Stachelski garnered 17 assists.
