SCAC Tournament: Colorado College 3, @UDallasVball 1

SHERMAN, Texas – The University of Dallas volleyball team (23-13) concluded its 2014 campaign after a 3-1 setback versus No. 15 Colorado College (28-8) on the second day of competition in the SCAC Tournament. Battling in the 3rd/4th place match, the third-seeded Colorado College battled a tough fourth-seeded Dallas squad that could not get over the hump in the final two sets of the season.

The navy and white were defeated 25-8 in the opening match, before evening things in the following round on a 25-14 decision. Apparent momentum for the Lady Crusaders staked them a 21-17 edge, but the Tigers tallied eight of the final nine points to secure a 25-22 win.

In the final set of the afternoon, CC claimed the third place spot in a 25-18 display.

After fighting back in the opening sequences of the last game, The Tigers benefited from another lengthy run, this time 7-0; to create some distance on the navy and white. However, UD would not go quietly and nipped the deficit to as close as five with a 22-17 score.

Junior middle blocker Jaime Birzer (Ottawa, Kan.) led Dallas with nine kills while senior middle blocker Emily Caples (Walnut Creek, Calif.) ended her career with eight on the day.

Caples also came up big defensively as she posted a game-high seven blocks. Sophomore libero Jessie Koster (Sherwood, Ore.) had another strong performance with 25 digs and sophomore outside hitter Mairin Guilfoyle (Roanoke, Va.) added 11.

Senior setter C.J. Broadbent (Goodyear, Ariz.) capped a nice weekend by delivering 32 assists, and raised her total on the year to 1206. Broadbent also earned a spot on the SCAC All-Tournament Team.
