HAWKINS, Texas - The University of Dallas volleyball team (9-6) picked up a pair of victories in 3-1 and 3-0 series wins over Philander Smith and Jarvis Christian College respectively on Wednesday at the Rand Gymnasium.

Jarvis Christian College (2-9) was the hosting location, and the Lady Crusaders posted 22-25, 25-10, 25-18, and 25-16 results in the afternoon contest over Philander Smith (5-12).

Later on the navy and white polished off Jarvis Christian with a sweep going 25-14, 25-15, and 25-10.

Match 1: Dallas defeats Philander Smith, 3-1:

It was a tightly contested first set, with the Lady Crusaders unable to come on top of the opener, falling by three. However, the Dallas volleyball team clobbered a match-high 25-10 result in the following round to swing the momentum in the navy and white's favor.

Dallas concluded the meeting with 25-18 and 25-19 sets in the final two frames versus the Panthers.

A trio of Lady Crusaders collected double-digit numbers in kills, paced by sophomore outside hitter Mairin Guilfoyle (Roanoke, Va.) with 13. Joining the second-year starter were senior middle blocker Emily Caples (Walnut Creek, Calif.) and junior middle blocker Jaime Birzer (Ottawa, Kan.) with 11 each.

Senior setter C.J. Broadbent contributed 36 assists, and a quartet of players were strong on defense, piling double figures in total number of digs that helped combine for 77 overall in the contest. Forming the unit of four were sophomore libero Jessie Koster (Sherwood, Ore.) with 16, freshman defensive specialist Diana Hassink (Tulsa, Okla.) and Guilfoyle with 11 apiece, and junior right side hitter Cat Dowgwillo (St. Louis, Mo.) with 10.

Broadbent didn't quite notch the feat, but did come one shy of making it five members with nine.

Match 2: Dallas defeats Jarvis Christian 3-0:

In the nightcap, it was all Dallas, limiting the Bulldogs to 39 points over the trio of sets in a series sweep. The Lady Crusaders opened things in a 25-14 opening round.

Jarvis Christian posted its largest scoring output in the second set, but it was not enough to overcome the road team's 25-15 final. Dallas wrapped things up in the final frame, claiming its largest margin of victory on the day resulting in a display of 25-10.

Caples led the offense with 10 kills. The senior was only player in this contest to break double figures on either side, but was joined by a trio of players with nine apiece.

That group featured: Birzer, Guilfoyle, and Dowgwillo of the Lady Crusaders. Koster and Guilfoyle were leaders in the defensive category with 13 and 11 digs, respectively. Broadbent added 33 assists.

Next Opponent:

Dallas returns to conference action as the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Cross Divisional No. 2 is slated for Sept. 27-28 in Shreveport, Louisiana. The Lady Crusaders will face Southwestern University and Trinity on Saturday prior to wrapping the two-day contest on Sunday versus second year members, Schreiner University and Texas Lutheran University.
