SHREVEPORT, La. - The University of Dallas volleyball team (10-8, 2-3 SCAC) dropped two matches in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Divisional No. 2 on Saturday. Dallas was topped by Southwestern University 3-1 in the first tilt Saturday morning, before falling shy in a 3-2 contest versus Trinity University.

It was the first of two days of the busy weekend slate hosted by Centenary College of Louisiana.

Match 1: Southwestern defeats Dallas, 3-1:

In the morning match, the Lady Crusaders were able to secure a 25-22 win in the opening set. The navy and white led by as many as seven, 17-10, never allowing Southwestern (11-6, 4-1 SCAC) to lead after scoring the first two points.

The Pirates recorded a 25-13 win in the second set, and then nail-biting third round followed favoring the black and gold. Dallas nipped a 5-2 deficit and later exchanged points the rest of the way with its opponent.

With a 25-25 deadlock, the squads traded possessions before Southwestern got kills from Olivia Drummond and Kaitlyn Foster to conclude a 28-26 final.

After competing to a 3-3 start in the final frame, the Lady Crusaders were unable to maintain pace, falling in a 25-20 setback.

Senior middle blocker Emily Caples (Walnut Creek, Calif.) and junior middle blocker Jaime Birzer (Ottawa, Kan.) amassed a game-high 15 kills apiece. Senior setter C.J. Broadbent (Goodyear, Ariz.) notched 39 assists.

Defensively, sophomore libero Jessie Koster (Sherwood, Ore.) produced a season-high, 43 digs.

Match 2: Trinity defeats Dallas, 3-2:

No. 16 Trinity (12-5, 4-1 SCAC) rallied down 2-0 to produce a 3-2 series win in five sets against the Lady Crusaders in the late afternoon match-up Saturday.

Dallas squeaked out a 25-22 win in the first set after it had begun the sequence with a 3-1 advantage and never trailed regardless of how narrow the Tigers remained behind. The navy and white would also increase its match-edge, 2-0, with a 25-19 victory in the following set, before the top 25 ranked opponent shifted the momentum.

In the third set, both squads battled early on, and the Lady Crusaders built a 14-9 lead that would be erased after 10 unanswered Trinity points. The scoring sequence provided the difference as the Tigers staved off a Dallas comeback and finished 25-23.

UD would then fall in the remaining rounds 25-12 and 15-5 to close out the contest.

A trio of Crusaders notched double figures in kills with Birzer and Guilfoyle slamming 14 overall. Freshman outside hitter Mary Scholz (Fallon, Nev.) added a career-high, 13.

Defensively, sophomore libero Jessie Koster (Sherwood, Ore.) garnered 26 digs, while Broadbent and Scholz also collected double-digit totals with 17 and 13, respectively.

39 assists would be reflective of another busy match for Broadbent, as she combined for 82 in the first two contests.
