Volleyball opens season strongly, defeats Sul Ross State University and Westminster College (MO); Dallas set for two matches Saturday

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas volleyball team (2-0) opened the season with an impressive showing at the University of Dallas Invitational on Friday at the Maher Athletic Center.

Match 1: Box score 

Emily Caples (Walnut Creek, Calif.) led Dallas with 14 kills and three blocks in their first match of the day, a three set sweep (25-18; 25-19; 26-24) of Sul Ross State University. 

Freshman outside hitter and middle blocker Jaime Birzer (Ottawa, Kan.) had an impressive defensive outing, posting a team-high 16 digs. 

Dallas dominated the match in the first two sets. The team suffered in the third set from hitting and service errors.

The Lady Lobos continued to fight throughout the set, taking the Lady Crusaders past regulation play. However, Sul Ross fell short and surrendered the match to Dallas in a hard-fought last point.

Match 2: Box score 

In their second match of the 2012 season, Dallas swept Westminster College (Mo.) in three sets (25-22; 25-11; 25-12). The team came out shaky, but after winning the first set, they were determined to dominate the next two. 

Sophomore Emily Caples (Walnut Creek, Calif.) posted a total of 13 kills in the match, while senior Theresa Wohldmann (Florissant, Mo.) added another 11 kills. Hannah Glick (Dallas, Texas), a fresh face on the team, was responsible for 19 digs throughout the match.

The Lady Crusaders combined for a .346 hitting percentage to secure the win against the Lady Blue Jays.

Next opponents: 

With a head full of steam, Dallas turns their attention to Saturday, the concluding day of the University of Dallas Invitational. With five more matches slated in day two, the Lady Crusaders draw Kean University (N.J.) at 9 a.m. and Alma College (Mich.) at approximately 5 p.m.
