SEGUIN, Texas - The No. 3 Seed University of Dallas women's soccer team defeated No. 2 Seed Southwestern University 1-0 in the semifinal of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) tournament on Saturday. In a thrilling game that saw both defenses stand their ground, Andrea Coppi (Keller, Texas) finally found the back of the net deep in double overtime for the victory.

Dallas largely controlled the game in the midfield against Southwestern, leading to multiple attacks mainly spearheaded by Alyssa Mencacci (League City, Texas) and Maddie Rodriguez (Houston, Texas). Despite their command of the midfield, the game's shooting totals were fairly even. UD held a close advantage in both shots and shots on goal at 16-12 and 7-6, respectively.

Both backlines hampered each opposing offence, forcing mostly harmless shots that were easily managed by goalkeeper Johnna Campbell and Macey Henderson (San Antonio, Texas). Henderson made a pair of important saves on both sides of overtime. With less than ten seconds left in regulation, Henderson saved a shot by Hannah Hall, and then on just over a minute into overtime Mary Kate Beggs got into the middle of the 18-yard box and got off a dangerous shot toward the corner that Henderson saved going to her left.

As the clock reached the 109th minute, Coppi received the ball in the middle of the field about 35 yards out from the goal and dribbled upfield toward the left side of the goal. Around the edge of the box, Coppi took a left footed shot that got by a diving Campbell and bounced off the post and into the goal.

With her three goals, Coppi has the most total goals scored by a member of UD in a single SCAC tournament.  She also is now tied with UD alumna Nicole Johnson for the most career goals in the SCAC tournament by a Crusader.

With the 1-0 win, Henderson and the Crusader backline have now earned their fourth clean sheet of the season. All have come of the 1-0 variety and three have been away from Irving.

Dallas moves on to play top-seed Trinity University in the SCAC Championship on Sunday. When the Crusaders and the Tigers played earlier this year, Trinity won 1-0 in overtime. Since that game, Dallas is on a four game winning streak that includes a pair of 1-0 shutouts. Trinity (9-0, 7-0) were the SCAC runners up in 2019, tying Southwestern 0-0 in regulation and losing in penalty kicks 5-4. Trinity has also set a tournament record for goals scored with 13 goals scored so far.

The SCAC Championship game will be at 1:00 p.m. CST in Seguin, Texas hosted by Texas Lutheran University.

Worth Noting:

UD's most common result this season is a 1-0 score which has happened five times in the eight games they have played.  They are four wins and one loss in games that are 1-0.  1-0 is also the most frequent result for Trinity this year, occurring three times.
