Crusaders Led by Coppi to SCAC Semifinals in Win over St. Thomas on Saturday

IRVING, Texas - The No. 3 Seed University of Dallas women's soccer team defeated the No. 6 Seed University of St. Thomas 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) tournament on Saturday. After a pair of goals were traded, less than a minute apart, about midway through the first half, Dallas hit the game deciding goal off the right foot of freshman Andrea Coppi (Keller, Texas).

Dallas led a large advantage in total shots, 14-7, however the Celts were more precise with the opportunities presented and ended the game comparable to the Crusaders in shots on goal, 7-6.

Both teams were even on corner kicks, 2-2, and the Crusaders drew more whistles in the game with more offside calls, 3-0, more fouls, 12-10, and a yellow card issued to junior Maddie Rodriguez (Houston, Texas).

Prior to the game's first goal, St. Thomas nearly drew first blood in the 16th minute as Riley Keck received the ball with the bench side of the 18-yard box.  Keck beat a defender and forced freshman goalkeeper Macey Henderson (San Antonio, Texas) to come out of the goal.  Keck beat Henderson and got off a shot, but the shot was saved by junior defender Michelle MacIntyre (Houston, Texas) to prevent the early deficit.

Dallas opened the game's scoring, putting in a goal in the 22nd minute. May Lien Le (Katy, Texas) served the ball from the spectator's sideline of the field into the middle just outside the 18-yard box. After a couple of bounces, Rodriguez redirected the ball off one touch toward the spectator side of the box to a wide open Coppi who scored with a left footed shot into the side netting.

Mere seconds later the St. Thomas equalized. The Celts attacked up the spectator sideline and toward the endline Desiree Lewis dropped a pass back toward the edge of the box to an open Haile Hernandez. Herandez with the right foot then hit the floating shot just inside the upper 90 on the far side to tie the game 1-1.

Dallas retook the lead in the second half scoring the 71st minute. MacIntyre passed the ball from the bench sideline into the middle to Coppi above the penalty spot, and shooting with the right foot Coppi sliced a shot into the side netting to give Dallas the 2-1 lead.

Dallas nearly went up 3-1 less then two minutes later as sophomore Izzy Barajas (Bryan, Texas) barely missed a pair of goals. The first shot hit off the post, and a few seconds later the second hit off the crossbar. The Crusaders did not require the cushion, as their defense swarmed St. Thomas the rest of the way limiting the opposition to just one shot on goal, which was secured by Henderson at the 82:18 mark. Henderson finished with three saves.

Coppi notched her first collegiate goals with the pair in the tournament match. The trio of Crusaders picking up assists in the match tallied their first ones on the campaign.

With the win on Saturday, Dallas knocks out St. Thomas of the SCAC tournament and advances to the semifinal round.  The quarterfinal win for Dallas is their third consecutive win in the SCAC quarterfinal round and for the fifth time since joining the conference.

UD's matchup next week will be against the No. 2 Seed Southwestern University with the game itself to be hosted by Texas Lutheran University.  The semifinal game between UD and Southwestern will be played on Friday, April 23 at 3:00 p.m. CST.
