Women's Soccer spirited on 'Senior Day', late goal proves costly
The University of Dallas women's soccer team (7-11-1) celebrated 'Senior Day' and concluded the season on Sunday, Nov. 7, against Rhodes College.
Prior to the match, Lady Crusader seniors Cheryl Hinze (Houston, Texas/Langham Creek H.S.), Hannah Langsfeld (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Academy), and Mary Gaffney (Cascade, Colo./Manitou Springs H.S.) were given flowers and escorted to midfield, as their career highlights were detailed.
With UD looking to send their seniors out on the right note, a spirited match ensued.
Forward Claire Sexton (Salem, Va./Salem H.S.) delivered a great shot in the match's 53rd minute, which beat the keeper, giving UD the 1-0 advantage. The score was Sexton's 17th of the season, and was assisted by Emily Rogers (San Antonio, Texas/MacArthur H.S.), a duo of freshmen with bright futures.
Rhodes was able to equalize the score just three minutes later, with a goal from Alice Hilgart. Sarah DiLella was credited with the assist.
In the end, Rhodes netted a late score to defeat the Lady Crusaders, 2-1. Rhodes' Caroline Colpoys sent an arcing shot to UD goalkeeper Brigid Hasson (Fairfax, Va./Trinity at Meadowview), which was affected be the wind. It snuck by Hasson, giving Colpoys the game-winner in the 86th minute.
