Women's Soccer: 2010-11 season review

Under the leadership of first year head coach Kristina Corona, the University of Dallas women's soccer team finished the season 7-11-1, winning three of their last four matches.

The Lady Crusaders' 1-0 defeat of Austin College certainly marked a high point of the season, as it was their first victory over the Kangaroos in six years.

A trio of freshmen -- Claire Sexton (Salem, Va./Salem H.S.), Brigid Hasson (Fairfax, Va./Trinity at Meadowview), and Emily Rogers (San Antonio, Texas/MacArthur H.S) -- asserted their will in 2010, and in the process have created a strong nucleus heading forward.

Sexton, a United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Honorable Mention All-American, led Dallas in goals (18), and points (38), placing her tenth and eleventh, respectively, all-time in the Lady Crusader record books. She also tied a school record for most goals in a game by one player (4) against LeTourneau University.

Rogers, who saw action in a defensive/utility role, is another star in the making. Rogers netted three goals in addition to registering six assists on the season. Her tenacious play certainly didn't go unnoticed.

Hasson, whom was named Dallas' 2010-11 Most Valuable Player (MVP), finished her freshman campaign with six shutouts, putting her fifth all-time in the Lady Crusader record books. Furthermore, her 146 saves placed her sixth all time.

In addition to the freshman that led Dallas, two four-year seniors turned in solid performances, defensively, and were largely responsible in helping Hasson achieve success. Hannah Langsfeld (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Academy) and Mary Gaffney (Cascade, Colo./Manitou Springs H.S.) anchored a defense allowing 40 goals on the season, which kept the Crusaders in many of their matches.

Langsfeld started all 19 games, putting her in a tie for first all-time in games played for Dallas (79), while Gaffney is eighth overall with 71. The duo combined for one goal and two assists, and will be remembered as two of the program's best defenders to have dawned Crusader navy and white.

Buzz is aplenty for the 2011-12 season, as the University of Dallas will compete for the first time in the Southwestern Collegiate Athletic Association (SCAC). Things are looking up for the Lady Crusaders and coach Corona, who is busy on the recruiting trail.
