Women's Lacrosse edged late at Carroll University

WAUKESHA, Wis. – The University of Dallas women's lacrosse team came up short in a back-and-forth contest on Saturday at Carroll University. The Lady Crusaders (2-7) led 6-5 at halftime, but Carroll (3-5) regained the edge with three straight goals at one point in the second half to win 11-10. Dallas is now 1-1 in games decided by a single goal this season.

The home team took a 1-0 advantage within the first five minutes, but UD's senior Hayley Rodgers netted an unassisted goal at the 24:52 mark to tie the game. Both teams traded scoring runs as Dallas nipped deficits each time and forced four ties in the stanza. Sophomore Sarah Schmitz connected on a pass from Rodgers to knot the scoreboard 5-all with 5:16 left in the half. Junior Gwen Mohler (San Francesco, Calif.) gave the Lady Crusaders their first lead of the game in the final 2:41 minutes on her third goal of the campaign.

Dallas extended the edge to its largest of the afternoon with back-to-back scoring results by senior Colby Madrigal (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) in less than two minutes to begin the second frame. Carroll countered with a goal at the 27:34 mark by Katie Majewski with an assist from Betty Koenig, but the Lady Crusaders went back up 9-6 as freshman Lexi Leite (Houston, Texas) rang in her second netter of the day.

The momentum shifted to the Pioneers the remaining 18 minutes as they notched five of the last six goals during that stretch. This included three straight over around a three minute span. With 17:39 left, Ariannah Ritter scored with a man-up to begin the run. Kailey Leahy would hit the game-tying goal to bring the score to 9-9.

Madrigal, who finished with a game-high five goals, netted her final one on a free-position to give UD a 10-9 edge with just under eight minutes left in regulation. Leahy would counter for a hat trick of her own around five minutes to go and tied the match for the sixth time. She fired the game-winner at the 2:25 mark as her trio of unassisted goals in the last 15 minutes nipped the Lady Crusaders in a nail-biter.
