Women's Lacrosse opens season at Millsaps College, defeats Majors

JACKSON, Miss. - The University of Dallas women's lacrosse team (1-0) picked up a win in their first contest of this season, as the Lady Crusaders defeated Millsaps College on the road, 11-8.

With sophomore Anna Massey (Amarillo, Texas/River Road H.S.) in the pipes for Dallas, the Lady Crusaders quickly fell behind, allowing the games first three goals to the Majors in the 28th, 26th and 27th minutes of the initial period.

Christine McFarland (Floral Park, NY/Floral Park H.S.) then responded in a big way for Dallas. The midfield/attack put in the game's next three goals, and in the process leveled the score, 3-3.

Dallas seized the lead at the 14:47 mark of the first half, when sophomore attack Mary Salotto (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline H.S.) netted the go-ahead goal. Roughly eight minutes later, freshman attack Rose Sweeney (Bolingbrook, Ill./Benet Academy) beat Madelyn Walker -- Millsaps' goalkeeper -- giving the Lady Crusaders a two goal cushion.

Millsaps countered with two scores in the waning minutes of the first period, making the score at the break, 5-5.

When play resumed, Salotto broke the tie with a 28th minute score. Over a minute later, however, Kristy Gourly brought the score back to even. McFarland then put Dallas back on top, but Gourly responded with her third and final goal of the game.

Tied in a 7-7 draw, Salotto stole the show for Dallas, netting the next two goals of the game, putting the Lady Crusaders up 9-7. With over two minutes remaining in the game, Salotto tacked on her fifth goal of the contest, giving Dallas the 11-8 win. Some notables were Massey earning the win in net, along with Salotto and McFarland scoring five goals apiece for Dallas.

Dallas outshot Millsaps on the night, 29-21, led in ground balls, 20-10, and won the turnover advantage by eight over the Majors.

Up next for the Lady Crusaders will be a 1:00 p.m. match on Saturday, Feb. 18 against Tennessee Wesleyan on the campus of Millsaps College.
