Women's Basketball Falls to Trinity

January 27, 2024

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas women's basketball team lost their conference game against Trinity University 72-63 on Saturday, falling to 12-9 overall on the year and 6-6 in conference play.

The Crusaders had a puzzling start to their game; they went almost the entire first quarter without a two-point bucket, but were leading 20-17 going into the second quarter.  Tessa Hastings made their first two-pointer in the final minute of the period; until that point, they were 0-of-7, but were 3-of-5 from beyond the arc and 9-of-10 from the free throw line.

Their second quarter performance was an inverse of that, as they went 4-of-8 from inside the arc, but were 0-of-8 from beyond it, allowing Trinity to pull ahead and go into halftime with a 37-31 lead.

Shockingly, Trinity were also oh-fer from three as both teams went nearly 20 minutes without making a three-point shot.  Adryan Alvarez finally broke that streak with two and a half minutes left in the third quarter to pull Dallas within seven points.

Though Trinity had their worst quarter of the game, shooting just 30% from the field and 0% from three (their three-point drought lasted 23 minutes), they were able to maintain their edge over the Crusaders by going 13-of-16 from the free throw line in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter was Dallas' most efficient as they shot 40% from the field, but didn't have the volume to cut into the deficit as Trinity did just enough to hold on for the win.

Adryan Alvarez led the team with 21 points, scoring 20+ for the second time this season.  Maria Dicenta had 14 points on the night, her second best tally in a single game this season.
