Women's Basketball Picks Up Third Conference Win at Southwestern

December 29, 2023

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The University of Dallas women's basketball team won their conference game against Southwestern University 68-48 on Friday, improving to 9-5 on the year and 3-2 in conference play.

The first quarter was back and forth as the Pirates jumped out to an early 7-2 lead.  The Crusaders tied the game at 8-8 after the first media timeout, but Southwestern were back leading by six just a few minutes later.  The first quarter was fought to a 14-14 stalemate, as Adryan Alvarez (pictured) knocked down two three-pointers in the final minute to tie the game.

The two sides continued to match each other blow for blow in the second quarter, with the game tied up three separate times across seven minutes of play.  Alvarez made a second-chance jumper with three minutes left in the half to give the Crusaders a 22-20 lead for what would ultimately be the final lead change of the game.  Dallas extended their lead and went into halftime with a 29-22 advantage.

Dallas' offense exploded in the third quarter, as the Crusaders went 10-of-16 (62.5%) from the field and 4-of-6 (66.7%) from beyond the arc.  It was a total team effort, as no one player dominated the play; six different Crusaders scored in the period, Taylor Rawls leading the way with seven points going 3-of-4 from the field.  The Pirates were efficient, shooting 45.5% from the field in the third quarter, but the Crusaders' defense limited their opportunities.

The Crusaders went into the fourth quarter with a comfortable 19-point lead and continued to build on it, leading by as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter.  Though the fourth quarter was evenly matched, the Pirates couldn't cut into the deficit and Dallas cruised to their third conference win.

Alvarez led all players with 17 points, going 6-of-17 from the field and 3-of-7 from three.  Rawls flirted with a double-double, scoring nine points and leading all players with a single-game high of seven assists.
