Alvarez Surges as Crusaders Come Up Short vs Schreiner

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas women's basketball team lost their conference match with Schreiner University 75-72 on Saturday.  They fall to 7-7 on the year and are 3-4 in conference play.

Neither team started off particularly well, though the Crusaders did have the hot hand of the moment in Tessa Hastings, who went a perfect 3-of-3 from deep in the first quarter.  After scrapping out the first quarter to a 14-14 draw, the two sides continued to trade blows.  Schreiner would find some daylight in the dying minutes, taking a 36-30 lead into halftime.

The third quarter marked a turning point in the game, as Schreiner sharpened up a bit and the Crusaders began to falter.  Though they carved out the opportunities they couldn't get anything to fall, going 3-of-14 from the field as Schreiner outscored them 24-10 in the period.

Chasing 20 at the start of the fourth quarter, Dallas needed something special if they were going to close the gap, and they got something special out of Adryan Alvarez.  The sophomore guard went off for 22 points in the final 10 minutes of the game, going 6-of-9 from the field, including four three-pointers, and 6-of-8 from the free throw line.

Alvarez got the Crusaders within four points, and Alyssa Sullivan made it a one point game with 14 seconds left thanks to a clutch three of her own.  Schreiner made it a three point game once again with two free throws, with Dallas forced to foul in the final 10 seconds, giving the Crusaders the final possession of the game.  Alvarez had the ball in her hands and got off the would-be game-tying three, but missed the target.  Sullivan grabbed the rebound, but time expired before she could get off a shot.

Alvarez would end the night with 29 points, her second highest total of the season.  Sullivan finished the night 4-of-7 from the field with 12 points and six rebounds.  Bailey Melton led all players with eight rebounds.
