Women's Basketball Defeats TLU in Conference Opener

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas women's basketball team won their conference opener against Texas Lutheran 72-67 on Friday.  They pick up their first home win and improve to 3-3 on the year.

Sharpshooting was the name of the game for Dallas in the first half, shooting 40% from three in the first quarter and 50% from three in the second quarter.  Tessa Hastings in particular put the team on her back in the first quarter, scoring 14 of Dallas' 19 points in the period with three three-pointers.

Alyssa Sullivan was the hot hand in the second quarter, going 4-6 from the field including two three-pointers.  The duo combined 29 of UD's 40 points in the first half, as UD took a 40-31 lead into halftime.

Dallas extended their lead to 17 points five minutes into the third quarter after a layup by Adryan Alvarez, but would fail to sink another field goal for the remainder of the period.  TLU clawed their back and cut the deficit to four points going into the fourth quarter.

A game that once felt firmly in UD's control was suddenly anyone's game, and the Bulldogs got the lead down to one point a minute and a half into the fourth quarter.  The Crusaders did just enough to keep their lead and forced the Bulldogs to play the foul game in the final minute.  They would make good on their chances at the free throw line and hold on for the win.

This marks the first time the women's basketball program has won their conference opener since the 2014-2015 season, and their best record after six games since the 2017-18 season.

Hastings led all players with 16 points and shared the three-point lead with Sullivan, the pair both making three baskets from beyond the arc.  Sullivan was second on the team with 15 points in 25 minutes off the bench.  Adyran Alvarez went 5-10 from the field for 13 points, and Caroline Croft led the team with five assists and notched 10 points.
