Crusaders Give Schreiner First Defeat after Hanging on in Tough Fight

KERRVILLE, Texas – The University of Dallas women's basketball team picked up its first road win of the season and delivered Schreiner University's first loss in six outings this season with a nailbiter, 54-52, final on Saturday.

Neither team shot particularly well, with the Crusaders (3-6, 3-6 SCAC) shooting slightly higher with a 30.4 percent mark to Schreiner's 27.4-clip. Both teams were cold from three-point territory as UD went 4-for-16 and the Mountaineers were 2-for-10. The difference came at the free throw line where UD as 72.7 percent (16-22) and Schreiner only hit 10-of-21.

Camille Fowler (Helotes, Texas) was the big cause for the Crusaders success at the free throw line with a 9-for-12 effort. Those points accounted for more than half the SCAC Player of the Week's team-high 14 in the game. The freshman also earned her first double-double with 11 rebounds to match a team-best with Imani Hardin (Helotes, Texas).

Both teams got off to slow scoring starts in the first quarter for the second day in a row, but UD kept things close with a 12-10 deficit. Two minutes into the second quarter saw Beyonce Perry (Lake Jackson, Texas) go two-for-two at the charity stripe to tie things at 12 and then Fowler drained a go-ahead trey. Five more points came in UD's 10-0 surge thanks to a layup by Alyssa Sullivan (Wylie, Texas) and triple by Amber Turner (Rogers, Ark.). Turner chimed in with all six of her game points in this stanza. Her other field goal was from downtown and came with 3:45 minutes remaining before halftime. UD held the Mountaineers (5-1) to a free throw in the last four minutes of the period.

Up 25-19, the sides finished even with 13 points in the third quarter. It got even quickly with Schreiner rattling six consecutive points in less than a minute to prompt a UD timeout. In a 31-29 lead late in the quarter, five free throws helped the Crusaders expand the lead. Kaycie Willis (Selma, Texas) was responsible for one of the free throws and had a late basket carry the Crusaders to the final quarter with a six-point lead (38-32).

The Crusaders lead reached 10 in the first part of the last quarter with Anika Herron (Coppell, Texas) and Fowler making layups. The UD lead seemed to hold around the same area until Schreiner's Sydney Williams made a jump shot to slice the score to 49-45 with 2:12 minutes left in regulation. Williams followed with a steal but missed consecutive layup attempts in which the Crusaders ultimately claimed the rebound. With exactly a minute to go, Miranda Vallejo drained a trifecta to close the gap to a point. The Mountaineers came up with another steal and would not capitalize on the opportunity. After retaining an offensive board, the Mountaineers got whistled for a charge. Perry sank two free throws to help secure the win, as UD protected the ball and added three free throws in two trips from the team's leading scorer Fowler to help seal the win. Schreiner did draw a foul on a three-point attempted shot, but Zahra Cross hit two-of-four at the line to close the 54-52 line.

Perry was the other Crusader in double figures with 10. Willis chipped in eight points and seven boards from the bench. The rebounding battle was nearly even, as SU held an edge by one, 48-47. The Mountaineers really thrived in the post with a 30-18 edge in points in the paint. They also benefitted from 28 turnovers compared to UD's 20.

Schreiner was led by Ivarra with 12 points and Cross with 10. Williams tied a game-high 11 rebounds, and Ivarra followed with seven for second on the squad.

The three wins match head coach Bri Calver's first season a year ago, and are also the same amount of conference wins the school last had in 2017-18. The last time UD prevailed head-to-head with Schreiner was a 71-54 triumph in 2017-18. This is the Crusaders first win at Kerrville since these teams started competing together in the SCAC in 2013-14.

Dallas will play its final home games of the season on Feb. 12-13 versus Southwestern University. Tip-off on Friday is at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.
