Crusaders Capture 1st Win of Season by Holding Off Centenary Friday Night

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas women's basketball team won for the first time this season, defeating Centenary College 70-63 on Friday night at the Maher Center. The Crusaders took a 30-26 halftime lead behind a five-point scoring advantage in the second quarter. 23 points in the third quarter helped build the Crusaders (1-4) build their largest lead of the game of 18 with 5:20 left.

Centenary (0-5) rallied back with a strong fourth quarter, but the Crusaders were able to swing the momentum with a pivotal three-point play by Amber Turner (Rogers, Ark.) with 1:08 left in the game. Her conversion at the line made it a two possession game (66-60) and the Ladies could not bring the deficit lower than four the remainder of the game.

Alyssa Sullivan (Wylie, Texas) and Camille Fowler (Helotes, Texas) each poured in game-highs of 19 points apiece. Sullivan went 7-for-10 on the field and added seven rebounds and three assists. Fowler also had three dimes and scored 13 of her points in the third quarter. Turner had seven of her 17 points in the last quarter, including five points in the closing 78 seconds.

Imani Hardin (Helotes, Texas) garnered a personal-best 17 rebounds. Raylee Minich (Crowley, Texas) chipped in nine points from the bench.

The Crusaders fell behind 4-0 but came back with a couple one-point leads. Down 17-13, Turner knocked down a three-pointer to close the quarter down one. In the second quarter, the teams stayed even until four points by Hardin put the Crusaders up by that margin at halftime.

Sullivan sparked UD's biggest scoring run of 13 points at the start of the third quarter. Fowler came up with a pair of three-pointers with a Turner triple in-between to make it a 41-26 lead. Sullivan capped the surge and the Dallas defense held the Ladies scoreless until a 5:48 free throw. UD's double-digit lead was being threatened as Centenary scored the last five points, including a Addy Tremie trifecta with 13 seconds in the frame.

UD was still ahead by 10 mid-way through the fourth, but things tightened as foul trouble started to affect the home squad. With 1:32 left, Kristen Stuart split at the free throw line to make it a 63-60 game. The played that followed was Turner making a jump shot and drawing the foul to get the extra free throw. Centenary got a point back at the charity stripe, and Dallas was able to make three of its last four shots at the line to prevent the lead slipping under four.

The Crusaders shot 37.9 percent from the field. Fowler and Turner combined for seven of UD's nine made three-pointers. The teams were mostly even on the boards, while UD committed three more turnovers (21-18) and that led to a three-point difference in that category favoring the Ladies (20-17).

Hardin's 17 boards were the most by a Crusader since Michelle DeCoud grabbed 19 at Hendrix College on November 15, 2016.

Centenary was led by Addy Tremie with 18 points and also had seven boards. Kristen Stuart tossed in 15 points, while Amelia Bagwell secured a team-high 12 rebounds.
