Stoia Reaches 1,000; Huge 3rd Quarter downs Crusaders at Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas – A rough third quarter was too much for the University of Dallas women's basketball team to overcome at Southwestern University on Friday night. The Crusaders (10-13, 2-10 SCAC) took their first lead of the game on a three-pointer by Caitlyn Worry (Lumberton, Texas) at the halftime buzzer. The offense came to life for Southwestern (9-14, 6-6 SCAC) in the 3rd quarter, outscoring its opponent 32-9 to gain command of an eventual 68-50 final.

1,000 CAREER POINTS CLUB

Seana Stoia (Tulsa, Okla.) etched her name in the UD record books with her 1,000th career point occurring on a jump shot with 2:26 in the fourth quarter. The senior forward is now the 13th player to achieve the milestone. Dallas last had two players eclipse 1,000 in 2014-15 when Marleyna Bustamante ('15) and Brooke Hagemann ('15) did it within a week of each other.  

NOTABLE STATISTICS

- Stoia led the Crusaders with 12 points on her milestone night. She scored 10 of them in the second stanza. The forward was a rebound shy of a double-double and posted a team-high in that column.

- Michelle DeCoud (Monument, Colo.) followed in scoring with nine points.

- Helen Onyenso (Oak Park, Ill.) and DeCoud each garnered six boards.

- Lindsey Gendron (Houston, Texas) and Onyenso combined for 13 points off the bench with seven and six, respectively.

- The Pirates were paced by Madison Edwards with 17 points and Zhazze Brown with 16.

- Naomi Brown garnered 10 rebounds for a game-high.

- Southwestern shot 40.9 percent from the field compared to UD's 32.7 percent.

- Neither team shot well from behind the arc, as both connected on four. The home squad went 10-for-13 (76.9%) from the free throwline, while Dallas was at 60 percent (12-20).

- The Pirates won the battle on the glass 49-31.

- Bench points were identical at 20.

- Turnovers were nearly even, with the Crusaders have one extra miscue (19-18) to SU. Southwestern did swipe a 10-5 edge in steals and score a 19-10 difference in points off turnovers.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Southwestern tallied the first six points with four coming from Edwards. DeCoud put the Crusaders on the board with a jumper about three and a half minutes into the quarter. Dallas slumped offensively with as Holly Tonry (Seattle, Wash.) achieved the other points in the 10-minute span with a layup at 4:48. The Pirates had doubled that scoring output at that juncture with eight and only had one other field goal until the first break with a Madison Lasater shot at 2:40. Southwestern led 10-5 after one.

Down the first three minutes by nine (16-7), the road squad stormed back with 13-of-14 points to close the first half. DeCoud started an outburst of seven unanswered. Tonry cut the gap to five (16-11) with 4:27 and Gendron found the bottom of the net with a trey to make it a one possession game with three and a half left. Southwestern's final field goal was at 7:36 by Brooke Swift, as the lone point before intermission on the Gold and Black side was a Renee Walker free throw with about a minute left.

Dallas got hot from downtown briefly as Gendron, Celsi Caraway (Arlington, Texas), and Worry drained three-of-four trifectas in the contest. This trio came in a row for UD with Caraway knotting the matchup at 17 with just under a minute. Worry lifted her team in front for the first time, 20-17, all game as time expired.

It was the only advantage for the Crusaders, as Cecily Woolfolk started the first 15 seconds of the third quarter with two at the charity stripe. Brown's layup switched the other lead change of the game in favor of the Pirates about a minute in. Southwestern made it 23-20, before Stoia split with the first-of-two at the line to get the Crusaders on the board for the first time in the frame at 7:36. The next two minutes witnessed the Pirates charge further in front with nine unanswered thanks to field goals. Tori Carraway started what was a small surge in the big quarter. A pair of Edwards layups sandwiched a trey by Kelsey Faykus.

Stoia ended the scoreless streak with another split at the free throw line, but Dallas did not achieve its first basket from the field until Gendron drained the other triple at 4:43. The Crusaders ended up down 49-29 by the last 10 minutes and could not overcome the margin.
