Austin College outscores Crusaders by 10 in Final Quarter; Pick up Victory Friday

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas women's basketball team was unable to contain Austin College in the final quarter, dropping a 63-51 final at the Maher Center on Friday evening. The Crusaders hustled out to a 16-9 advantage after the first 10 minutes of action. Austin College clawed back in and then some timely scoring at the end of the third and early in the fourth quarters propelled the guests.

Dallas (9-12, 1-9 SCAC) moved into a tie for 7^th with Colorado College following a Centenary College win in Colorado Springs. The Crusaders will play the holder of the final seed for the SCAC Tournament on Sunday with four league contests left.

- Seana Stoia (Tulsa, Okla.) tallied a team-high 16 points and pulled down six rebounds.

- Caitlyn Worry (Lumberton, Texas) drained four treys in six attempts to help tie a career-high 14 points. This is the 4^th time this campaign (all conference games) that Worry has made a quartet of trifectas.

- Michelle DeCoud (Monument, Colo.) completed the trio of top scorers and snatched seven boards. Helen Onyenso (Oak Parks, Ill.) posted eight points and a team-best nine rebounds off the bench. Seven came off the offensive glass.

- The 'Roos were led by Ann Savage with 17 points. She had all four made three-pointers for the visitors.

- Bryce Frank and Olivia Bailey each registered double-doubles respectively with 15 points and 10 rebounds and 14 and 12.

- Austin College shot 41.7 percent from the field while the Crusaders were 28.8 percent. AC sank 19 free throws in 27 attempts, while the Crusaders went 7-for-12 at the line.

- Dallas forced the road team into 21 turnovers and swiped 10 steals (5^th time this season).

- The Crusaders held a 17-9 advantage in points off turnovers.

- The Crusaders did have 16 offensive rebounds and helped provide a 14-11 favoring margin on 2^nd chance points.

- AC tallied 12 fastbreak points compared to none by the Crusaders.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Stoia had the first two points to get her team on the board first a minute and half within the opening jump ball. AC's Kendall Heitmeier made the first-of-two free throws to nip the score in half, but Worry swished back-to-back threes and sparked eight unanswered Dallas points. DeCoud's jumper capped the run and reflected a 10-1 outburst just above the midway point of the quarter.

The 'Roos made it five-point game with the next four that concluded with Kendra Rainey connecting on two free throws. Stoia countered back with her own four points and Dallas exited the last buzzer up 16-9 thanks to a jumper with four seconds by Shelby Waldron (Banning, Calif.). Dallas did score seven points off miscues from the guests and four on second chance points.

In the second quarter Dallas maintained an early edge, but after Stoia's field goal for the first UD points two and a half minutes into the frame; the 'Roos strung the next six consecutive points to grab their first lead at 19-18 with 5:07 before the intermission. UD's Worry drained her third trey to flip the lead prior to Caitlyn Collins knotting scored at 21 and 4:40 left.

Those were the final points on either side until 2:56 remained and Heitmeier was fouled on a three-pointer. She made two-of-three from that foul to break the deadlock. Worry had her final trey of the game making it 24-23, and then the team's leading scorer sank a pair of free throws to push the edge at 26-23. Heitmeier cut the gap to 26-25 for the halftime score. Austin College scored 10 fast break points in that quarter, but did not have any such points the remainder of the night.

The third quarter reflected seven lead changes, including three in the nearly two and a half minutes. Worry had the first one favoring UD. Onyenso ended a near three-minute dry spell on either side with a jumper in the paint that moved the scoreboard to 30-29. Bailey countered a few seconds later to stop AC's cold shooting and flip the lead for the 5^th time at that juncture. Two more free throws by the guests stretched the difference to three. However, DeCoud netted the next four points with two at the charity stripe and a field goal to put the home white jersey's up a final time 34-33.

The 'Roos got Anna Savage, the SCAC's leading three-point percentage shooter, to hit her first trey with five seconds to end the third with an AC advantage 36-34. Savage hit half her attempts from downtown, and all four came from that moment on. The game's leading scorer started the final quarter with a three to continue what would be an 8-0 run after a Heitmeier field goal (41-34). UD's DeCoud scored a layup on an assist from Holly Tonry (Seattle, Wash.) to make it a five-point game with 7:44, but that was as close as the game remained. Another Savage field goal from behind the arc stretched the Austin College lead to double figures (46-36).

The lead ballooned to 14, before Dallas got DeCoud and Stoia to etch the next five points. Stoia had to hit the first of two made three-pointers of the game on that shot. Her other made trifecta reduced the deficit to 55-44 in the last two minutes. Onyenso scored on a layup after a miss by the 'Roos to bring the difference to single digits. Still, other than Onyenso countering the next layup by Savage, the Crusaders never pulled past nine points and dropped their 5^th in a row.
