Hendrix hits timely 3's; Push past Crusaders in OT

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas women's basketball team (7-4) dropped a 77-70 overtime decision on Tuesday afternoon against Hendrix College (7-5) at the Maher Center. Up by three points (62-59) with five seconds left in regulation, Amber Turner for the Warriors connected on a game-tying three with .01 seconds left. The Crusaders were outscored 15-8 in the extra frame, which led to their first setback at home this season (3-1).

This is the first overtime game at the Maher Center since the 2013-14 campaign. Dallas prevailed on January 26 versus Southwestern University 68-65. Dallas had played two overtime games, one-per-year, in the two seasons following. UD split those with the most recent being a 64-61 setback at Austin College last year.

STAT NOTABLES

- Michelle DeCoud (Monument, Colo.) posted a team-high 19 points. It is the 9th contest she has eclipsed double figures in scoring. DeCoud also led the team in rebounds (8) and blocks (8).

- DeCoud's eight rejections matched a school record by Jean Davin versus Texas College on November 11, 1989. The forward added three steals and two assists.

- Cels Caraway (Arlington, Texas) was a spark off the bench with 12 points and a game-high five steals. She contributed seven rebounds with four from the offensive glass and matched a game-high four assists.

- Madison Martin was the other player scoring double-digits with 12 points and contributed seven boards for second on the team.

(Team Notes)

- Dallas was outshot 36.4 percent to 40.9 percent from the field. The Crusaders went 5-for-22 shooting (22.7%) from three and 9-for-12 shooting (75.0%) from free throws. The 28 made field goals was the 2nd most this season for UD.

- Hendrix was 46.2 percent (6-13) from downtown and 65.4 percent (17-26) at the line.

- Both squads combined for 17 blocks with UD notching 10. That was three shy of matching a school record against Texas College on Nov. 16, 1989. Dallas also combined for 17 against Hendrix in two games this season.

- Dallas swiped 11 steals, which was the 4th time to break double-digits in that column this year.

- The home team held slight edges in points in the paint, 38-32, and fastbreak points, 12-10.

- Hendrix won the battle on the boards 46-42.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Warriors gained a quick lead 12 seconds from the tip as Leah Smith was fouled and hit both free throws. UD countered with Sammi Tso (Las Vegas, Nev.) draining a three-pointer to lift her team back in front on the next play. It was back-and-forth throughout the opening quarter as the teams traded baskets. Martin knotted the contest at seven with 4:12 left on the backend of two free throws. After Dyslin converted on a layup, Dallas scored the next four points over a minute and a half with DeCoud and Lindsey Gendron (Houston, Texas) sinking jumpers. Dyslin knotted the contest back at 11 with both free throws made and four seconds on the clock.

Hendrix took control in the second quarter by outscoring the Crusaders 18-7. This helped build a 29-18 edge at halftime. The Navy and White struggled shooting 11.8 percent (2-17) in field goals and were 19.4 percent (7-36) at intermission. The Warriors had only made two field goals in the first quarter, went for 50 percent (8-16) in the next 10 minutes. This included tallying eight-of-11 points in the first four minutes to build the largest lead of the game by any side. DeCoud got it within three (19-16) on two free throws, but 10-2 run closed the last 3:41 with Hailey Bode making a trifecta as time expired.

Things turned in favor of the Crusaders again in the third quarter, as six of the first eight points in three minutes to cut the deficit to 31-24. With 4:23 left in the third, DeCoud's jumper moved the margin to 32-26, and then Caraway took off with a steal that led to a fastbreak layup on the next play. A minute passed and it was a Stoia block that began a turnover on the offensive rebound that led to Caraway picking up another steal and breakaway layup to nip the score 32-30. Hendrix held off UD until the last 43 seconds when DeCoud was fouled on a made layup. Her three-point play knotted the score at 35. In the waning seconds down two, Caraway snatched a steal on an inbounds play that found Tso for a last second inside shot to tie things 37-all going into the final 10 minutes.

UD benefitted from a 19-8 scoring frame, which included 60 percent shooting compared to 22.2 percent (2-9) for the Orange and Black. The home side repeated its shooting numbers exactly in the fourth with a 9-for-15 (60%) display from the floor.

After missing 16 straight attempts from behind the arc, Caitlyn Worry (Lumberton, Texas) dialed the second made one of the game at 6:29 to stretch a 46-42 advantage. That was in the midst of a 9-0 run for the Crusaders started by Stoia's old fashion three-point play. Her extra point at the charity stripe tied things at 42. Tso split at the line to give UD the lead and then Caraway followed Worry's three on the next possession with a familiar steal and fastbreak layup forcing a Hendrix timeout.

Dyslin earned the next four points on inside looks to cut things to two points (48-46), but Tso responded on a jumper with 4:15 left. Two minutes later, Smith hit the second-of-two free throws, which closed the gap at 52-51. After an exchange of field goals over the next minute that kept it a one-point game, Tonry swished a three from the top of the arc and pushed the advantage 59-55 with 36 ticks left. Hendrix's Martin missed both free throws on the next possession, but then a jump ball returned the ball back to the visitors. Bode's layup cut the defict to a pair with 20 seconds. Stoia connected on both free throws, and Dyslin answered with a layup. A split at the line kept Hendrix alive for five seconds to hit a game-tying trey. Turner delivered from the left side as time nearly ran out.

The Warriors only made six three-pointers all game but chimed half of them in a quick span as Turner gave her squad a lead that would not be relinquished in OT. Tonry countered with a layup, but Jordan Tibbits' trey started a nine-point streak. A trifecta from Stoia ended the run and cut the gap to four (74-70) with 1:11 left. However, the Warriors went three-of-four at the line to secure the victory.
