Women's Basketball shy of Sweeping the Pirates 57-54

GEORGETOWN, Texas – A historic night for senior Marleyna Bustamante (Donna, Texas) wasn't enough to lift the University of Dallas women's basketball team (10-7, 4-4 SCAC) past Southwestern University (8-11, 6-2 SCAC) on Friday evening. Dallas has dropped two in a row and moved to fourth in the conference standings, as SU maintained a tie in second with Schreiner.

Bustamante claimed the lone double figure scoring performance for the Lady Crusaders with her second highest total 19 points on the campaign. It is the second time this season the guard has matched that total as she's combined for 61 in the past trio of contests, which included a season-high 24 last Saturday.

Most notably for the native of Donna, Texas, was her achievement of breaking the 1,000-point plateau in her career. The senior tied the mark on a free throw with 18:19 left in the first half to lift UD ahead 6-0. She now boasts 1,018 in her four-year stint with the Navy and White.

Southwestern erased the road squad's early run, despite not getting on the board until nearly three minutes into the opening stanza. The Pirates maintained the momentum through the midway point of the frame following a 12-2 spurt.

The rest of the half would be back-and-forth for each team, with SU mustering the advantage into intermission 26-25.

Out of the break, the Black and Gold utilized the momentum off the first four buckets to help spark an 11-5 stretch and build its largest lead of the affair, 37-30. Dallas immediately countered with five unanswered to nip the deficit to a pair; which it would remain on several occasions.

With 11:29 left, freshman Helen Onyenso (Oak Park, Ill.) hit a jumper to knot the game 41-all. A pair of free throws by senior Brooke Hagemann (Oklahoma City, Okla.) after snagging a steal and being fouled propelled the Lady Crusaders ahead. A trifecta by freshman Jessica Foster (Oklahoma City, Okla.) completed the 7-0 run.

Southwestern University would not fade away and reclaimed the lead on two more occasions, the final time of the night off an Olivia Podaras layup. Jordan Owens doubled the advantage on an inside shot of her own with 2:42 in regulation.

UD cut things to 55-54 with 1:43 but couldn't find the bottom of the net through the final buzzer. Valerie Logan for the Pirates sealed the victory with a pair of shots from the free throw line.

Bustamante shot 50-percent (7-of-14) from the floor and 5-of-8 at the charity stripe. Hagemann added seven points and tied freshman Michelle DeCoud with a team-high six rebounds. Dallas shot 31.6-percent for a field goal shooting average, 41.7-percent from downtown, and 68.4-percent from the free throw line.

The Pirates outrebounded the Navy and White 45-37, but committed 17 turnovers to the road team's 15. UD benefited from 20 points off the Black and Golds' miscues while surrendering 17 in that category to the home squad.

A trio of players paced SU with Annie Bourne amassing a double-double for 12 points and boards. Owens led the Pirates with 15 and McKamie Place chipped in 13 from the bench.
