Women's Basketball falls in first Conference Contest on Friday

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas women's basketball team (7-4, 1-1 SCAC) dropped its second-straight contest for the first time this season in a 69-66 result versus Schreiner University (3-8, 1-0 SCAC) on Friday evening.

It's also the second setback at the Maher Athletic Center for Dallas and was SU's first conference victory of the campaign.

Both squad's opened in a back-and-forth battle that would remain deadlocked 35-all at the break.

In the second stanza, the Lady Crusaders and Maroon and White each would gain momentum and have a couple point margin throughout the midway point of the frame. Down 47-44 with 11:43 left, UD pushed a 7-0 spurt to go ahead and eventually lead by as many as five with about six and half minutes to play.

The Mountaineers would cut the deficit and tie things 58-58 with 2:46 on a Jordyn Villa jumper. After a pair of free throws from senior Marleyna Bustamante (Donna, Texas), the road team would notch a 6-0 run and never relinquish it the remainder of the affair. Dallas erased the gap to two on a trio of occasions, but were unable to overcome the margin.

The Navy and White just edged Schreiner in shooting percentage, 40 to 39 percent. Both teams were woeful from the charity stripe, as Dallas shot 63 percent (20-of-32) and the Maroon and White posted 50 percent (14-of-28).

SU benefited from 31 bench points, but were outrebounded slightly, with the Lady Crusaders grabbing 41 compared to 38.

Freshman Michelle DeCoud (Monument, Colo.) paced the home squad with a game-high 15 points for the reserve. Senior Brooke Hagemann (Oklahoma City, Okla.) and Bustamante each contributed 13. Sophomore Seana Stoia (Tulsa, Okla.) chipped in 11 to round out the quartet of double-digit scorers for Dallas.

Hagemann and DeCoud pulled down eight rebounds while Stoia was right behind tying a season-high seven.

The Mountaineers' leading scorers were Kelsie Jackson and Codi Simmons tossing in 14 points apiece. Jackson also grabbed eight boards to match the game-high.
