Women's Basketball downs Sul Ross State with huge Second Half

ALPINE, Texas – The University of Dallas women's basketball team (5-2) defeated Sul Ross State University (2-7) on Tuesday afternoon, 72-55. Dallas relied on a 20-point second half scoring differential to secure its third victory in the last four contests.

Both teams shot 40 percent from the floor, but a woeful first stanza for the Lady Crusaders left the squad down 31-28 at intermission. Dallas produced a 28.1-shooting clip, and then hit a torrid amount of 51.6-percent in the final frame.

UD kept things close in the first 10 minutes of the opening half, but the home team would utilize a 9-1 stretch to push its marginal difference to as large as 20-10. The navy and white nipped at the deficit immediately and would pour in seven unanswered points to narrow things by three with 5:53. Things would remain back-and-forth throughout the remainder and the Lobos would be up the same difference at halftime.

A 21-9 run over the first seven minutes of the second half pushed Dallas in front for good in the affair. After witnessing six lead changes in the game, the road squad grabbed the edge on a jumper from sophomore Seana Stoia (Tulsa, Okla.) just over two minutes into the frame, and never looked back. The greatest lead of the day for UD was 24, which occurred with 4:03 remaining.

A trio of players led Dallas with double-digit scoring performances highlighted by senior Marleyna Bustamante's (Donna, Texas) season-best, 15 points. Helping form the unit were sophomores Holly Tonry (Seattle, Wash.) and Stoia with 11 and 10, respectively. Fellow classmate Sammi Tso (Las Vegas, Nev.) added eight points to go along with a season and team best four assists.

Senior Brooke Hagemann (Oklahoma City, Okla.) nearly matched a season-high 11 rebounds coming one shy of the mark she notched at Hendrix College on November 30. Bustamante contributed eight to come in second on the team.

Desare Allen paced SRSU with 16 points while Ashley Ousley followed by hitting nine. Ivette Trujillo reflected a team-high six rebounds and added eight points in the contest.

The Lady Crusaders enjoyed a 44-34 rebounding advantage in the win, and rattled off 27 points from turnovers.
