Yoshimura drops game-high 24-points on road for Women's Basketball, but Birmingham-Southern College (AL) deals 62-55 defeat to Lady Crusaders
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Dallas women's basketball team (5-12, 1-8 SCAC) was bested by Birmingham-Southern College (Ala.) on Saturday afternoon, after second-half success from the free-throw line helped the Lady Panthers pull away to a 62-55 victory.
After an ebb-and-flow first half -- seeing three different lead changes and five ties -- Dallas and Birmingham-Southern (9-9, 4-5 SCAC) were deadlocked 22-22 entering halftime.
It was porous shooting for both teams in the first half, as Dallas sank 23.1-percent (6-of-26) from the field, in comparison to Birmingham-Southern's mark of 30.8-percent (8-of-26).
To begin second-half scoring, 5-foot-4 junior guard Kylie Yoshimura (Temple City, Calif./ Mark Keppel H.S.) gave the Lady Crusaders a 24-22 advantage with a layup at 19:35.
Yoshimura recorded high-point honors on the evening, netting 24-points on 8-of-18 shooting from the field, including sinking 4-of-10 from 3-point range. Going 4-of-7 from the free-throw line, Yoshimura also recorded three rebounds, four assists and two steals in 38-minutes of game action.
The Lady Panthers, however, quickly negated Yoshimura's bucket with a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession. From 19:05 of the second half, onward, Birmingham-Southern did not relinquish their lead.
Despite Dallas' best efforts in a tightly-contested second-half in which Birmingham-Southern led by a game-high 10 point, 38-28 margin at 14:05, the Lady Panthers pulled away to a 62-55 victory.
In the second half, Birmingham-Southern deposited 10-of-14 from the free-throw line, while the Lady Crusaders netted 4-of-6.
Birmingham-Southern converted on 43.3-percent (13-of-30) from the field in the second half, while Dallas put home 40.-6 percent (13-of-32).
5-foot-10 sophmore post Christy Allen (Burton, Mich./St. Thomas More Academy) was the only other Lady Crusader to enter double-figure scoring, while Birmingham-Southern had more of a balanced attack with four players totalling 10 points or more.
Allen registered 11-points on 4-of-13 shooting from the field, while sinking 3-of-6 from the charity stripe. Notching a steal in 31-minutes of play, she also finished with a game-high 13 rebounds (five offensive) to record a double-double.
Birmingham-Southern led points-off-turnovers (19-10) and bench points (21-6).
