Women's Basketball triumphs 77-65 over Colorado College (CO) to earn first SCAC win; Bustamante produces game-high 29-points for Lady Crusaders

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas women's basketball team (5-8, 1-4 SCAC) registered their first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) win of the season, as the Lady Crusaders defeated Colorado College (Colo.), 77-65, at the Maher Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon.

Dallas was clicking on all cylinders early-on versus the Lady Tigers (8-5, 4-1 SCAC), as head coach Jina Johansen's squad captured a 12 point, 18-6 lead at the 11:28-mark of the first-half when freshman guard Emily Madden (Torrington, Wyo./Torrington H.S.) netted a 3-pointer. These were Madden's only points in four-minutes on the court.

The remainder of the half saw Colorado climb back to within six-points of Dallas at the 3:18 mark, before the Lady Crusaders surged in the final two minutes.

Dallas ended the half on a 10-0 run, thanks in large part to the play of 5-foot-5 freshman guard Marleyna Bustamante (Donna, Texas/Pharr-San-Juan-Alamo H.S.), who finished with 17 of her game-high 29-points in the first half.

On the afternoon, Bustamante netted 6-of-14 from the field, knocked down a 3-pointer, and went a perfect 16-of-16 from the free-throw line. She also accumulated three rebounds (one offensive), three assists and five steals in 33-minutes of work.

At halftime, the Lady Crusaders boasted an 18-point, 41-23 advantage on the scoreboard.

Dallas sank their shots at a rate of 41.9-percent (13-of-31) in the first half, while limiting Colorado to 28.6-percent (8-of-28) from the field.

The Lady Crusaders claimed their largest lead of the game -- a 22-point margin -- at 18:07 of the second half, when 5-foot-6 freshman guard Lauren Jumaoas (Carrollton, Texas/Newman Smith H.S.) stole the ball and coasted for a layup.

Jumaoas's final stat-line included a 2-of-5 effort from the field, while sinking 1-of-2 from 3-point range. She also notched two rebounds, three assists and four steals in 30-minutes of game action.

The second-half was anything but a breeze for Dallas, as they watched their significant lead diminish to just two-points with 3:20 remaining in regulation.

A Kylie Yoshimura (Temple City, Calif./Mark Keppel H.S.) 3-pointer with 1:03 to-go let the Lady Crusaders exhale a bit. The 5-foot-4 junior guard's timely-basket gave Dallas a seven-point advantage.

Yoshimura finished the game with nine-points on 3-of-12 shooting from the field, with all of her points coming from beyond the arc. She also tallied two rebounds, four assists and a steal in 32-minutes of play.

Colorado was forced to implement foul-tactics late, hoping Dallas would miss free throws. This did not pan out for the Lady Tigers, however, as Bustamante helped seal a 77-65 victory for Dallas with six free-throws down the stretch to give Colorado their first conference loss.

The Lady Crusaders shot a clip of 31.4-percent (11-of-35) in the second half, while Colorado fared better from the field to the tune of a 57.7-percent (15-of-26) mark.

Points-off-turnovers proved a key cog in this contest, with Dallas leading the category in totality, 30-16. The Lady Tigers turned the ball over 34 times on the game, while Dallas limited their turnovers to just 15.

Colorado out-rebounded Dallas, 47-29.
