Madden's 17-points not enough, as Women's Basketball opens season with 77-72 overtime road loss to Schreiner University

KERRVILLE, Texas - The University of Dallas (0-1) women's basketball team opened their 2011-12 season with a 77-72 overtime road defeat to Schreiner University early Tuesday evening.

5-foot-6 freshman guard Lauren Jumaoas (Carrollton, Texas/Newman Smith H.S.) gave Dallas their first points of the season, with a go-ahead 3-pointer at the 19:17 mark of the first half, which put the Lady Crusaders up 3-2.

Jumaoas finished the game with eight points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field, netting 2-of-4 beyond the arc in 11 minutes of game action. She also totaled three rebounds and three steals.

Dallas did not trail Schreiner (1-0) for nearly the next 13 minutes. However, momentum started to swing into the favor of the Mountaineers for the final 6:37 of the first half. During this stretch, Schreiner's biggest lead was eight points. The perseverant Lady Crusaders battled to shrink the defict to three points entering halftime.

The first-half of play saw Dallas shoot 40.6-percent (13-of-32) from the field, knocking down 38.5 percent (5-of-13) of 3-pointers attempted. The Lady Crusaders converted on 5-of-7 from the free-throw line, as well.

In the opening half, Schreiner made 52.2-percent (12-of-23) from the field, including 55.6 percent (5-of-9) beyond the arc. Additionally, the Mountaineers converted on 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the charity stripe.

5-foot-5 freshman guard Marleyna Bustamante (Donna, Texas/Pharr-San-Juan-Alamo H.S.) totaled 10 points at the half, tying her at the time for the game-high with Schreiner's Chelsea Sims. Bustamante's final stat-line included 12 points, three rebounds (one offensive), three assists and two steals.

In the second half, 5-foot-5 freshman guard Emily Madden (Torrington, Wyo./Torrington H.S.) led the Lady Crusader charge with nine points, giving her a team-high 17 for the game. Madden had three rebounds (one offensive), one assist and two steals in 31-minutes of playing time.

Unfortunately for Dallas, Schreiner would just not go away. Olivia Swarner knocked down a pair of big-time free throws for the Mountaineers with 45-seconds remaining in regulation to knot the game, 59-59. The two teams headed to overtime after nine lead-changes.

In the overtime period, Schreiner countered Dallas' 40-percent (4-of-10) shooting from the field, with an 83.3-percent (5-of-6) mark of their own. The biggest disparity in the extra-period occurred at the free-throw line, where Schreiner made 7-of-9 in comparison to Dallas' 5-of-6. In the end, Dallas fell to Schreiner by five points.

Of note, 5-foot-4 junior guard Kylie Yoshimura (Temple City, Calif./Mark Keppel H.S.) totaled 13 points on 5-of-18 shooting from the field, while sinking 2-of-5 3-pointers attempted and 1-of-2 free throws. In 24-minutes of play before fouling out with 47-seconds remaining in overtime, Yoshimura had seven assists, three rebounds and two steals.

5-foot-10 sophomore post Christy Allen (Burton, Mich./St. Thomas More Academy) was the fourth Lady Crusader to enter double-digit scoring, amassing 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field, in addition to netting 2-of-4 free throws.
