Women's basketball nets winning season, defeats UC Santa Cruz in Consolation Game of AD3I Postseason Tournament

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas women's basketball (14-13) has turned in a winning season for 2010-11, after going 1-1 in the AD3I Postseason Tournament, held at the Maher Athletic Center. The Lady Crusaders were defeated on Friday, Feb. 25, to open their tournament, by Nebraska Wesleyan University, 83-47, before knocking off UC Santa Cruz in the Consolation Game, 67-62, on Saturday, Feb. 26.   

Game 1: Dallas 47, Nebraska Wesleyan 83 Boxscore

After the first half of play, Dallas trailed Nebraska Wesleyan, 36-17. The Lady Crusaders' slow start hinged on 17.2 percent (5-of-29) shooting from the field, while Nebraska Wesleyan netted 40 percent (16-of-40) of their attempts.

When the second half rolled around, things continued to go south for Dallas, as the Lady Crusaders were outscored by the Praire Wolves, 47-30 in the final half of play. While Dallas improved from the field relative to the first half -- 33.3 percent (11-of-33) -- , Nebraska Wesleyan did also, as the Praire Wolves rattled home 45.5 percent (20-of-44) from the field in the second half.

Senior forward Cara Sczepanski (Highland Village, Texas/Marcus H.S.) boasted a game-high 22 points for the Lady Crusaders, in shooting 9-of-20 from the field, and making 4-of-7 from the free throw line. She also hauled in 12 rebounds, giving her a double double, to go along with a block.

Sophomore guard Kylie Yoshimura (Temple City, Calif./Mark Keppel H.S.) was the only other Lady Crusader to enter double figures in scoring, as she totaled 14 points. She also had six assists and six rebounds, as well as two steals.  

Game 2: Dallas 67, UC Santa Cruz 62 Boxscore

The score of the AD3I Postseason Tournament Consolation Game at halftime was knotted, 30-30, for the Lady Crusaders and the Banana Slugs.

Dallas was bested in the first half, field goal wise, by UC Santa Cruz -- Dallas shot 34.5 percent (10-of-29), while UC Santa Cruz netted 40 percent (12-of-30) of their attempts from the field. The Lady Crusaders made up for the disparity at the free throw line, sinking 8-of-12 as opposed to the Banana Slugs' 1-of-3 made attempts from the charity stripe in the opening half. 

During the second half, the Lady Crusaders were again outshot on the floor. Dallas knocked down 41.7 percent (10-of-24) from the field in the last half, while UC Santa Cruz improved from the initial period as well, shooting 46.2 percent (12-of-26) from the field to end the game. 

Dallas, however, countered by driving the lane and getting fouled, earning 22 second-half attempts at the free throw line, in which they converted on 16 (72.7 percent). UC Santa Cruz made half of their attempts from the charity stripe in the second half, going 3-of-6. 

Four players for Dallas entered double-figure scoring on the game. Sophomore guard Kylie Yoshimura (Temple City, Calif./Mark Keppel H.S.) led all scorers, with 18 points, on 4-of-10 shooting from the field, including sinking 1-of-3 from distance and 9-of-12 from the free throw line. She also record six assists, two steals and a rebound. 

Meanwhile, junior guard Kelly Regan (Plano, Texas/John Paul II H.S.) totaled 16 points, while freshman forward Christy Allen (Burton, Mich./St. Thomas More Academy) and senior forward Cara Sczepanski (Highland Village, Texas/Marcus H.S.) each amassed 15 points. 

With the win, first year head coach Jina Johansen has locked in a winning season, as the Lady Crusaders went 14-13 in 2010-11.
