Women’s Basketball topples Colorado College Tigers, continues winning streak

IRVING, Texas - On Sunday afternoon, the University of Dallas women's basketball team (8-6) defeated the Colorado College Tigers (6-8), 79-58.

The Lady Crusaders never trailed in this game, and saw their biggest lead balloon to 23 points.

Dallas went into halftime up by 21 on the scoreboard, 43-22. The most eye-opening first half statistic had to be Dallas' perfect 15-of-15 shooting from the free throw line.

Senior forward Cara Sczepanski (Highland Village, Texas/Marcus H.S.) led all scorers at the break, amassing 15 points for the Lady Crusaders on 4-of-7 shooting from the field, including knocking down her seven free throw attempts.

Sczepanski's final stat line saw her record a game-high and personal season-high 29 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the floor, along with sinking 11-of-11 from the charity stripe. She also concluded the game with six rebounds.

Making adjustments after the initial period, the Lady Tigers clawed back to within 12 points of Dallas at the 16:34 minute mark of the second half.

This margin occurred twice more, but proved to be the closest Colorado College would be to threatening the Lady Crusaders.

Dallas lived in the paint on the afternoon, and their success at the free throw line carried over into the second half. The Lady Crusaders made 25-of-28 (89.3 percent) of their free throws attempted, while Colorado College was able to convert 15-of-19 (78.9 percent).  

A big part of Dallas' attack was sophomore guard Kylie Yoshimura's (Temple City, Cali./Mark Keppel H.S.) ability to drive the lane. Yoshimura finished with 13 points, four rebounds, and nine assists.

Additionally, the Lady Crusaders boasted 46.3 percent shooting from the field, as opposed to Colorado College's 33.3 percent for the game.

Aside from Sczepanski and Yoshimura, much of Dallas' strong play came at the hands of Kelly Regan (Plano, Texas/John Paul II H.S.), who totaled 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field, including netting 2-of-3 from distance and 3-of-5 from the free throw line.

Having won six of their previous seven contests, the Lady Crusaders will put their four game winning streak to the test on the road when they battle Rhodes College on Tuesday, Jan. 11th at 5:00 p.m.
