Women's Basketball chases Austin College, boasts three game winning streak
IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas women's basketball team (7-6) took down the Austin College Kangaroos on Wednesday night at the Maher Athletic Center, 58-49.
The Lady Crusaders took their first lead of the game at the 11:41 mark of the first half, when senior guard Bethany Roessler (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) knocked down a jumper off of an assist from senior forward/center Joirdan Cole (Plano, Texas/Bishop Lynch H.S.).
Roessler finished with 13 points on the night, after shooting 4-of-7 from the field, and netting 5-of -6 free throws attempted. Cole had 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field, and sinking 4-of-5 from the free throw line. Cole also had nine rebounds – four offensive, five defensive.
Dallas saw their lead in the first half swell to 11 points, a margin which held into halftime.
It was a suspenseful second-half for the Lady Crusaders, as their 14 point lead dwindled to three points with 5:43 remaining in the game.
Both teams struggled from the field on the night – Dallas shot 28.8 percent as opposed to Austin College's 25.8 percent. However, the Lady Crusaders' ability to navigate through the lane and get fouled proved the difference in a game where Dallas made eight more free throws than the Kangaroos.
Kylie Yoshimura (Temple City, Cali./Mark Keppel H.S.) was highly effective in drawing fouls in the latter period. The sophomore guard went 6-of-7 from the free throw line in the second half, including sinking two free throws in the game's final minute to give Dallas a nine point victory. 10 of Yoshimura's 17 points came from the charity stripe.
Up next for the Lady Crusaders is a tilt against Colorado College on Sunday, Jan. 9th. Tip off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
