Softball Drops Two Tight Games with Austin

April 14, 2024

SHERMAN, Texas - The University of Dallas softball team lost both games of their conference double header against Austin College on Sunday, falling to 3-25 overall on the year and 0-15 in conference play.

Game 1

Dallas 2, Austin 3

WP: Hailie Swiatkowski (7-4)

LP: SunnyDale Thies (3-11)

The Roos jumped out to an early lead in game one, plating three runs on three hits in the bottom of the first.  Dallas took advantage of a defensive miscue and came up with a timely two-out hit to score two runs in the third, making it a 3-2 game for Austin.

After that, both offenses went nearly completely silent for the remainder of the game.  Dallas managed to get runners in scoring position twice over the next four innings, but could do nothing with them.

Abby Lasley tried to get a two-out rally going in the fourth with a double to right, but nothing came of it.

Isabella Halsey led off the fifth with a single, reached second on a sac bunt, then advanced to third on a groundout, only to be thrown out at home on an attempted double steal to end the inning.

Lasley once again tried to get things going with a single to lead off the seventh, but was thrown out trying to steal second.  The next two batters were set down in order to end the game.

Game 2

Dallas 4, Austin 7

WP: Alexus Johnson (8-10)

LP: Ava Aleman (0-2)

Austin took an early lead again in game two, scoring two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first.

Dallas slowly chipped away at the lead.  Jennifer Schmalz made it 2-1 with an RBI single in the second, Mackenzie Flocke tied it up with a two-out single in the third, then Dallas took the lead for the second time in the series on a double steal in the fourth.

The Roos were quick to respond, scoring four runs on two hits and an error in the bottom of the fourth, all with two outs, to take a 6-3 lead.  They added another run on an RBI single in the fifth to make it 7-3.

The Crusaders pulled one back in the sixth to make it 7-4, but couldn't do any more damage in the sixth and seventh.
