Softball Drops Two to St. Thomas

April 6, 2024

HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Dallas softball team lost both games of  their conference double header against the University of St. Thomas on Saturday, falling to 3-21 on the year and 0-11 in conference play.

Game 1

Dallas 0, St. Thomas 8 (5 Innings)

WP: Allison Hughes (6-2)

LP: SunnyDale Thies (3-10)

The Celts took the lead in the first inning and never looked back.  Chloe Bennet put St. Thomas on top with a two-out RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.  They added three more runs on three hits and an error in the bottom of the second to take a 4-0 lead.

Dallas was poised for a big inning, leading off the third with a walk and two hits to load the bases with no outs.  But the Crusaders couldn't capitalize, as the next batter popped up, a run was cut off at home on a grounder, and the inning ended with a groundout to second with the deficit still sitting at 4-0.

After St. Thomas added a run in the bottom of the third to go up 5-0, Dallas had the makings of a two out rally in the fifth after Lizette Sosa walked and Bre Barnes notched an infield single.  Isabella Halsey stepped up and slapped a single to right, looking deep enough to bring in Sosa for the Crusaders' first run of the day.  But Mallarie Munson nailed sosa at the plate with a perfect throw, and the rally was snuffed out as soon as it began.

The Celts scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth, and the Crusaders were set down in order in the top of the fifth to end the game.

Game 2

Dallas 2, St. Thomas 6

WP: Victoria Sossaman (8-5)

LP: Ava Trevino (0-9)

Dallas was in position to strike first in game two, getting runners on first and third with no outs after Barnes and Halsey led the game off with singles.  But Abby Lasley popped out, Halsey was thrown out trying to steal second, and Sosa grounded out to end the inning.

Instead the Celts jumped out to a 2-0 lead with an RBI triple and a double steal in the bottom of the first.

The Crusaders plated their first run of the day in the top of the third to make it a 2-1 game when Sosa got plunked with the bases loaded.  Ava Aleman grounded out to end the inning, leaving the bases loaded.  St. Thomas pulled the run back in the bottom half of the inning to go up 3-1.

Dallas threatened in the top of the fifth with back-to-back one out singles by Halsey and Lasley, but the threat was snuffed out without any runs scored.

St. Thomas made it 6-1 with three runs on three hits and two errors in the bottom of the fifth.  Dallas managed to score a consolation run on a passed ball in the seventh, but couldn't cut into the deficit any more.

The series will conclude tomorrow with a single game.  Originally scheduled for 12 noon, first pitch has been pushed to 11:30 am to try and squeeze the game in before inclement weather makes its way in.
