Trinity Rallies Late in Game Two to Sweep Double Header

March 29, 2024

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas softball team lost both games of their conference double header against Trinity University on Friday, falling to 3-18 on the year and 0-8 in conference play.

Game 1

Dallas 1, Trinity 10 (5 Innings)

WP: Jordan Arce (10-4)

LP: SunnyDale Thies (3-9)

The Tigers took advantage of a pair of errors by Dallas in the first inning and never looked back, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead.

The Crusaders struggled to get anything going at the plate, only managing four total baserunners across the first four innings.

Trinity continued to add to their lead with two runs each in the second and third innings, then piled on four runs on five hits in the top of the fifth to take a 10-0 lead.

Dallas had the makings of a late rally in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases with just one out and needing three runs to extend the game.  Mariah Hinojosa drew a walk with two outs to bring home the Crusaders' first and only run of the game, leaving the bases loaded to end the game.

Game 2

Dallas 1, Trinity 5

WP: Josephine Koelewyn (2-2)

LP: Ava Trevino (0-7)

The Crusaders held a narrow edge over the Tigers for most of the game, searching for their first win over Trinity since 2019.

Ava Trevino had what was inarguably the best outing of her young collegiate career, shutting the Tigers out for five innings while allowing just one hit, striking out three and walking just one batter.

Dallas took a 1-0 lead on a two-out error with the bases loaded in the bottom of the second.  While that 1-0 lead looked like it might be enough, the Crusaders will look back on the second and third innings as missed opportunities.  They left the bases loaded to end the second inning, then led off the third with a hit batter and a single.  Dallas couldn't capitalize on the early baserunners, and ended the inning empty handed.

Trinity managed to finally scrape across a run in the sixth inning to tie it up at 1-1.  Trevino had runners on second and third with one out, and was able to limit the damage to just the one run.

The wheels quickly came off in the top of the seventh, however.  A walk, an error, and a single saw Trinity take a 2-1 lead before the Crusaders could record the first out.  After getting the next two batters out, it looked as though Trevino could escape the inning with just the one run allowed, but back-to-back singles plated three more runs to give Trinity the 5-1 lead.

The Crusaders were set down in order in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.

The series will conclude tomorrow with a single game at 12:00 pm.
