Crusaders Fall to Centenary

March 26, 2024

SHREVEPORT, La. - The University of Dallas softball team made up their conference game against Centenary College, originally scheduled for March 17.  The Crusaders were defeated by the Ladies, falling to 3-16 on the year and 0-6 in conference play.

Dallas 1, Centenary 5

WP: Anna Scarbrock (5-5)

LP: SunnyDale Thies (3-8)

The two sides traded blows across the first few innings.  The Ladies were the first to strike, coming up with a two-out single in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead.

Dallas pulled a run back in the top of the second on a bobbled ball by the second baseman, bringing home MacKenzie Flocke who led off the inning with a double.

Centenary reclaimed the lead for good in the bottom of the third.  Mackenzie Cox led off the inning with a triple, then was driven home on a single by Isabelle Dominguez to make it 2-1.  The Ladies added three runs on four hits in the fourth inning to pad their lead, though they wouldn't need them.

By all rights, the Crusaders should have had two hits to start the fourth inning, but a couple of stellar plays by Centenary stopped the threat before it even began.  Flocke was robbed of a sure extra-base hit on a diving play in the right center gap by the center fielder, Cox, and Amarisa Garza had a sharp liner snatched out of the air on a leaping grab shortstop, Catherine Stokes.

A couple of baserunning mistakes in the later innings also took the wind from Dallas' sails.  In the sixth, Mariah Hinojosa was thrown out at second trying to stretch a single into a double, and in the seventh Garza was doubled off at first base after Lizette Sosa lined out to shortstop.
