Softball Splits with La Roche

March 12, 2024

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas softball team split their double header against La Roche University on Tuesday, improving to 2-10 on the season.

Game 1

Dallas 10, La Roche 0 (5 Innings)

WP: Julia Kruse (1-1)

LP: Emma Kaufman (0-2)

Dallas was in the driver's seat from start to finish.  After a scoreless top of the first by SunnyDale Thies, the Crusaders scored three runs on four hits and a walk before the Redhawks could even record the first out.

They made it a 5-0 nothing game with RBI knocks by Katie Duffy-Relf and Abby Lasley.  They could have had more, but Jennifer Schmalz lined out to the shortstop to leave the bases loaded, as La Roche finally managed to stop the bleeding.

The Crusaders doubled their lead with five runs in the third.  They took advantage of three walks, only needing two hits to plate all five runs in the inning.

Thies threw three scoreless innings in the circle, followed by two scoreless innings by Julia Kruse who recorded her first win of the season.

Lasley led all players with three hits in the game, going 3-for-4 with a stolen base, an RBI, and two runs scored.  MacKenzie Flocke led the team with 4 RBI, going 2-for-3 with two singles and one run scored.

Game 2

Dallas 6, La Roche 7

WP: Maura Wade (1-2)

LP: Ava Trevino (0-4)

The Crusaders were quick to take control in game two as well, stringing together four straight two-out hits to take a 3-0 lead in the first.

With RBI singles by Jennifer Schmalz in the second and Ava Aleman in the third, Dallas appeared to have a firm grip on the game.

But the bats came alive for La Roche in the fourth inning.  They racked up six hits and made full use of two walks and an error to score seven runs, four of which were unearned, to take a 7-5 lead.  It was an anomaly on the day, as it was the only inning the Redhawks scored in either game.

After being held scoreless in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, the Crusaders had all the makings of a late rally in the seventh.  They scored on two singles and two wild pitches, making it a 7-6 game with the tying run on second and no one out.  But the next three batters were set down in order as La Roche held on to split the day.

The series will conclude tomorrow, March 13, with a single game at 2:00 pm.
