Softball Drops Two to Hardin-Simmons

February 17, 2024

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas softball team lost both of their games in their double-header against Hardin-Simmons University on Saturday, falling to 0-4 on the season.

Game 1

Dallas 1, Hardin-Simmons 14 (5 Innings)

WP: Kylie Ruiz (1-0)

LP: SunnyDale Thies (0-1)

The Cowgirls struck in the top of the first with back-to-back one-out knocks to go up 1-0.  They took advantage of a bobbled ball in the outfield on a single to bring home another run and take a 2-0 lead after the first half inning.

After a scoreless second, Hardin-Simmons took a commanding lead after a tough defensive inning for Dallas.  To the Cowgirls credit, they came up with five hits in the inning, but took full advantage of three errors by Dallas to pile on eight runs in the top of the third.

The Crusaders managed to scrape across a run on a passed ball in the bottom of the third, but were held to just one hit in five innings of play as the Cowgirls saw out the win.

Game 2

Dallas 2, Hardin-Simmons 13

WP: Jorey Hood (1-0)

LP: Ava Trevino (0-2)

Despite what the final score ended up being, game two could have gone either way up until the final inning.  Dallas had their opportunities throughout the game, but couldn't capitalize on them.

Trailing 1-0 in the second, the Crusaders had a runner on third with one out and runners on second and third with two outs, but didn't plate any runs.

Down 2-0 in the third, they got on the board with an RBI single by Jennifer Schmalz, who then stole second to put in a runner in scoring position with one out.  She was stranded there, however, making it three runners left on base in two innings for Dallas.

The Crusaders stranded another runner in the fifth as the Cowgirls added two runs each in the fourth and sixth innings to take a 6-1 lead into the seventh.  From there, the flood gates opened as the Cowgirls piled on seven runs on five hits and an error to put the game effectively out of reach for Dallas.

Dallas sparked something of a two-out rally, stringing together three straight two-out hits to plate another run, but that would be their only consolation.
