Pitching Holds 4-3 Win on Millsaps College to Begin Weekend Tournament

JACKSON, Miss. – The University of Dallas softball team claimed a 4-3 victory on Friday night against Millsaps College in day one of the Millsaps Tournament 2020. Dallas never fell behind, as Mackenzie Tano (Wylie, Texas) drove in two runs in separate innings that were part of the road team's scoring within the first four frames.

Millsaps nipped the deficit to one with a one-out double in the sixth inning, but UD's Emily Martin (San Jose, Calif.) retired the next two batters to hold the score. Karina Campo (Georgetown, Texas) locked down her first career save in the seventh. The victory snapped a three-game slide.

The Crusaders grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning with Tano singling in Kerstyn McLain (Splendora, Texas). Millsaps tied things in the home half of the frame. After a scoreless second, the Crusaders put two runs up in the third. Tano drove in another run with the bases loaded. Maggie Watts (Arcadia, La.) contributed another ribbie that kept the runners moving station to station on the bases. Katelyn Norse got Millsaps a run back in the home third inning with a single

In the bottom of the sixth inning Ty Bergeron started with a hit by a pitch and then pinch runner Cameron Trussell stole second. After advancing to third on the first out of the inning, Gia Zeringue doubled to left center to score Trussell.

Watts, who started and went at least five innings in her fourth start to begin 2020, would be lifted for Martin. Martin induced two infield pop ups, including the final out to herself inside the circle to strand the tying run at second.

Campo allowed an infield single to Leslie Norris, who outran a dribbler to a pulled in Bri Hale (Austin, Texas). However, a lineout to Campo's left on the first base side shifted her to double off Norris and end the game.

Tano and Watts posted 3-for-4 games, while Annabel Anderson (Midlothian, Texas) launched an RBI-double with a 2-for-3. Madison Coutts (Tampa, Fla.) scored two runs, and Dallas' top three hitters combined for all the runs scored. Liz Cordova (Oklahoma City, Okla.) added a double. The Crusaders totaled a season-high 14 hits. Their trio of pitchers: Watts, Martin, and Campo did not allow a walk.

Both teams were errorless.

Millsaps had Norris and Zeringue garnered two-hit games. Lindsey Osbon tripled for the other extra base hit in the game. Hayleigh Rogers allowed four runs on eight hits and walked three in four innings. Hannah Derouen pitched three innings and gave up six runs and a walk. Both struck out one batter apiece.

The victory was the 250th for the UD softball program. Campo becomes the 10th Crusader in the softball program to record a save in a season, which matches the record in a season.
