Softball Participates in Cycle for Survival

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas softball team had players participate in Cycle For Survival on Saturday. Katelyn Lazarek, Emily Martin, Lindsay Devlin, Caitlyn Stevenson, Karina Campo, and Blyss Johnson rode stationary bikes to raise money to fight rare cancers. 

Cycle for Survival is the movement to beat rare cancers. Our high-energy indoor team cycling events provide a tangible way for you to fight back—100% of all money raised directly funds lifesaving rare cancer research.

Head Coach Caitlynn Dykes stated, "It was a great cause to break a sweat for! I couldn't be more proud as a coach that the girls felt called to go out and raise awareness for rare cancers that sometimes don't get the attention they need."

Lazarek works at Equinox Fitness, which teamed up wiht Memorial Sloan-Kettering to put on the event. The junior was already passionate about spin and was already excited to sign up. Discovering the cause, Lazarek had it close to her heart to participate, because last Fall her father was diagnosed with prostate cancer and anyone that knows her that he is her hero. While the news was absolutely devastating, tests and surgery helped him become cancer free in January of 2018. 

"He would not be with me today had it not been for extensive research and many advancements in medicine, advancements that save lives, like my fathers'," reflected Lazarek. "Events like Cycle for Survival create opportunities for research and advancements in medicin, advancements that save lives, like my father's." 

"Hearing stories of how the work done by Memorial Sloan-Kettering has given people a second chance at life was truly eye-opening and inspiring," stated Lazarek. "Their stories demonstrated to me how every dollar donated matters, and what we are doing, matters. This cause is so near and dear to my heart that I cannot wait to get more involved next year and grow our team and our donations and make an even bigger impact. Cycle for Survival will hopefully become an event not to raise money for rare cancer research, but to celebrate that we beat rare cancer, and I cannot wait to be apart of it."

Dallas opens the 2019 season on February 15 at home against Southwestern College (KS).
